The future invisible, the horizon distant...{Open} « Thread Started on Oct 9, 2009, 8:46pm »
Sakamata stood on the white sand beach, and breathed in the salty sea air. It felt good to be here, so relaxing, so peaceful. The sand was soft to the touch, and the wind blew through her fur like a spring breeze in a meadow.
Sakamata rolled on the beach, getting warm sand in her fur, and then stood up, shaking it all off. She ran around a bit, avoiding the water as it approached, then chasing after it when it receaded. She used Iwaku to throw a small stone high into the air, then ran after it and caught it in her mouth. She did this several times, then decided to lay down.
She layed on her back, and watched the sun set. It sure was a nice beach, some place where many wolves probably enjoyed. Where were they all, anyway? She wondered. I can't be the only one who discovered this place, and this place is too nice to keep secret for long.

A beautiful day this was. The perfect day for a lovely time on the beach. There was no reason for him to truly come out to this vast ocean, only the fact that he felt the calling of the rolling waves. He had sat on a cliff for some time, just watching the water churn and crash upon the rocks below. But now he was walking. His foot steps were slow, his stride long. He was in a hurry to get no where.
The large brute was almost completely black. The only spot of color was a silver stripe that ran from the tip of his nose all the way down to the tip of his tail. The "skunk" line was a trait that ran through out his bloodline. His father had had it, his mother, even his two younger sisters were graced with it. The color varied with each wolf yet at one point, it was easy to spot out who belonged to what pack due to that stripe. Bright and wise silver eyes peered out at the beach ahead.
He caught a curious sight and Zel had to smile. He could see the wolf running and rolling, having a grand old time. Well then, seemed ike someone knew how to have a good time. Keeping his pace that same slow lope he headed toward Sakamata, "Tell me, is the sand as cold as the water or just the oppisite?'

"Its actually quite warm." Sakamata replied, looking over the wolf. He was pure black, save for the silver stripe that ran down his back. He had huge black wings on him, larger than any wolf she had seen thus far in this strange land. She wondered how he wasn't overheating in this hot climate, but she didn't really care enough to find out.
"By the way, what is your name? I am Sakamata." She asked because she was curious, and it was usually rude of people to go too long without telling someone their name. Plus, it disturbed her a bit to not know who this was, and females often got killed by males when they were on their own.

She answered with no fear and he smiled as she mentioned the sand was warm. Indeed, the wya that sun was beating down. His toes spread out, taking in the fine grains before reclining back on his bottom. She introduced herself while in turn asking his own name. 'I am Zel Forthwind. But please, just Zel is fine.' He offered a warm smile, 'It's a pleasure to meet you Sakamata.' His wings lowered down, relaxing a few degrees. 'What brings you out to this vast body of water on this bright day?'

"The currents of time, and a longing for some being to call my own." She stated poetically. She was by no means a poet, but she had heard that question often enough that she had developed a response which suited most beings. She hoped this wolf wouldn't take it the wrong way, which he seemed likely due to his cockiness.
"And you?" She asked, "What brings you to this place? I would expect to see beings like you in the mountaintops normally."

She answered without any problem or any worrys off secrets being let out. Zel nodded his head as he looked out toward the oceans currents. Easily the waves rolled up onto the shore line, crashing against it before being pulled back out. Then it was his turn to answer. He took in a deep breath, the salty sea air stinging his nose for just a moment. At her observation though he smiled, a light chuckle leaving him. 'Oh stars no. I hate the cold.' He seemed to bristle at the thought of being involved with the snow or other cold climate. 'My sisters love it but it's not for me. I've always prefered warm sunshine and heat to something dreadful nipping at my paws.' He gave another exaggerated shudder.
'I came here though because I'm bit of a beach walker. Just something about the ongoing call of the ocean just brings one self to it.' Another deep inhale then back to her, 'Besides, it's quiet here. Not many wolves around to bother you in a time of meditation.' Zel, though cocky did love to be alone at times. Normally he flew around high in the sky where nothing could touch him, but this beach served his purposes for the day.

"Ah, ok." Sakamata said. She was really at a loss of words at this point. The winds seemed to calm her, and the sereneness of this place was refreshing. It was almost like they were the only two wolves left on earth, staring out at their separate futures on the horizon, but that was a silly thought, she knew.
She really wished she could feel what it was like to fly. She had never experienced it herself, but from what she had heard it was unlike anything walking could provide you with. She knew it would never happen though, she would just have to be content with it living in her dreams.
Stunned, she found herself asking the wolf, "What is it like to fly?" She instantly wished she hadn't asked that. Not only was that rude, it was also completely unlike her. Well, it wasn't completely unlike her, she had done many stupid things before. Whatever, She thought, Could have been worse.

That part of the conversation ended and they took a moment of silence. Zel found himself starring out over the water, wishing to reach that horizon. His tail flickered idly and then she voiced her question. His ear twitched and he thought about it for a moment. 'Like nothing in the world can touch you.' He laughed and shook his head, 'I can't really describe it but up in the air theres nothing to worry about. Everything is below you, including your problems. Truthfully , it's the best feeling in the world.' He didn't mean to bring her down for not having wings, but at the same he couldn't find it in his heart to lie to her.
'Come on,' he said suddenly, standing back up. 'I'll show you what its like to fly.' He would walk slowly at first till he was certain that she was following. THen he would slowly guide them toward the cliffs where he had orignally been sitting. Here he would lead her to a particularly thin spot that jutteed out over the ocean. Here the wind was blowing not so subtly. It was enough to prehaps chill one a bit to the bone, but not to the point where it was uncomfortable. 'Go stand over on that ledge and don't worry, if it can support my weight it can support yours.'

Sakamata did as he said, trusting that it wasn't a trap. If he had really wanted to kill her, he would have done it by now and not waited so long, and he didn't really seem like the bad sort anyway. Her breath was quick, full of excitement, and she kept her gaze on the line where the ocean meats the sea.
She couldn't believe she was actually going to experience flight. She was lucky, and she just felt like crying with joy, but she held it back, trying not to look like a weakling. She turned her head back towards Zel, said, "What now?" and took a deep breath, preparing for the answer.

Zel watched as she positioned herself over near the rocks ledge. She sat there for just a moment and then turned back to look at him. He smiled, 'It takes a bit of imagination now.' He stated shifting just slightly, 'Now face forward, close your eyes,' he'd wait for her to do so, 'Now imagine you're lighter than a feather and high above the world.' If she could picture it right, she would feel the wind stirring right through her fur. The sound of nothing but the sea churning beneath her as well as the soft whisper of that same wind. Whenever he hadn't the strength for flying, it was what he did. Hopefully Sakamata would find some joy in it. If not, well they could always find a tree to crawl up.

Again, she did as she was told, finally realizing what he was doing. He wasn't going to actually take her flying, but to simulate what flying felt like. That was good enough for her, though. Besides, imagination was one of her strengths. She could be a bit childish at times, but that was due to her ability to imagine things beyond what most beings thought of. She could do this, she knew she could.
She leaned forward, closing her eyes, and taking a deep breath. She felt amazing, like she could be untouchable. He was right, it really was like nothing words could describe.
Finally, after what felt like several minutes, Sakamata pulled herself back to reality, and said, "Thank you. You are right, it is an amazing feeling, and I think the real deal would be even better. You are truly blessed with your wings." She bowed, a polite gesture where she came from.

She didn't even hesitate to do what he told her to. He watched as she leaned forward, her head high above the churning waters, the wind whipping past her fur. Zel had to smile as he saw the serenity pass over her face. She wasn't really flying but he hoped she got an idea of what it was like and that she may do this again if the need ever arises.
She sat like that for several minutes and finally she came back down to earth and to reality. She thanked him and he chuckled lightly. 'Of course its not the real thing. But even when I'm feeling lazy it feels like the best thing.' He took a few steps closer to the edge, sitting just behind her to stare out over the ocean. 'So besides wishing you could fly, what else brings you here? Not many wolves enjoy the ocean this time of year.'

She often asked the same question herself. Most of the time, she just chose a direction and stuck with it until she found something or someone interesting, and then chose another direction and stuck with that. As she was walking through the forest, she had smelled the salt on the air, and wanted to investigate. Thus, she happened upon this place.
"I am just here. I have no reason for being anywhere, yet I am where I am. That is the type of wolf I am, I guess." She breathed in more of that salty air, feeling at peace, as a seagull flew overhead proclaiming its presence to the world. Down below, the sea was crashing against smooth, barnacle-covered rocks, and crabs were moving about.
A few moments later, she asked, "What about you? As you said yourself, not many enjoy the ocean this time of year."
