A new place and a new life « Thread Started on Nov 3, 2009, 11:08pm »
Lichen walked many miles and many days to even get where she was now. She heard the birds calling this land Yokusei and so it seemed here was a good place to wander and perhaps see if she could settle. She decided that her coat with it's varying colors of gray should stand out against the stark white of the snow, and surely the lurid green of the trees should some Lupine see her. It was cold here now, and the brief thought of if it stayed this way the whole year crossed her mind as her forepaws sunk through a top layer of crusty snow landing in the tunnel of a lemming.
Sighing she pulled a paw from it shaking it as she tested the land in front of her. Solid. Pushing herself from the tunnel track she leaped up and away growing quite irritated from the fact that was the 10th time that happened today. She kept her bright amber eyes on the sky and her ears pointed all around as she watched the bone white full moon rise into the sky. The horizon was a brillant pink, orange and gold the dark green of the coniferous trees; basking in the light as it faded now giving way to the glorious blue black of the night. Twilight. This was her favorite time of day be it before the sun rose or fell.
Lichen wasn't looking for much of anything or anyone though being, a social creature the company would be welcome if she could find it. A raven had followed her for a short while but, when he learned she had no food to share he called out his dismay and left her lonely once more. She missed her mother and her siblings. Her father most of all, his warm presence made her feel safe and now with him gone there was a constant frost that seemed to eat away at her very soul. "You'll find someplace of your own love. I taught you never to give up, don't lose hope now." His words calmed her now as she finally reached the treeline heading into the inky forest.
It was quiet now. No birds chirping not even the occasional hoot of an owl, this forest had an ominous feeling to it. It was that or the fact that she was making it seem more than what it was in the blackness. The soft crunch of the snow beneath her already freezing footpads seemed louder now as she looked about for a place to rest. A small knoll covered in her namesake caught her attention over to the left as she began to trot over. There was no smell of anything that come through here save prey animals.
Scratching out a plot on the frozen soil Lichen turned in a small circle. Long leg over lengthy leg, before she dropped to try to sleep for the night, she lifted her head to the pale moon taking a deep breath. A long, somber howl fell from her black lips. It told a tale of her hunger for family, her fatigue, and her lust for something better. As her song ended and she dropped her head, Lichen plopped to the ground curling into a tight ball hoping to find some peace in sleep for the night.

The forest became an illustration of color-- cast into the last light of fading day it sparkled with hues of sapphire, amethyst, emerald, gold, and silver. The horizon was an illustration of color, which was slowly being overrun by the hues and tones of night as they washed across the sky like the rising tide of the sea. They seeped into everything-- into the land, across the snow, and across the sky. Soon everything became dark-- it became frozen in eternity seemingly as the coldness of a winter night became the essence of the land, washing away color the full moon rose into the sky like the fully opened eye of some long lost god whose name had been forgotten to the tests of time. Stars peeked there way across the velveteen expanse of darkness and shone with a silver light. The ground below became a painting of black and of white, with shades of gray traveling between. And padding through this landscape was a creature of night itself. He rose from the blackness seemingly like a phantom rising from the dead, and became a sharp outline against the silver-white moonlight which was sparse between the thick tree branches overhead, which stretched as bone-white fingers sprouting from the ground in the form of emerald spires, destined to pierce the sky with their jagged tips. Weaving and darting across the snow-covered expanse was a lone wolf. Head was lowered, ears titled backward and cupping, calculating, and placing the sound lullaby of the night song into categories. Bird’s songs died out and were replaced by the feeble chirps of crickets, and the ethereal, unsubstantial hoots of nocturnal owls. Audible to his ears rose another sound, far separated from the rest and far closer than most of them, and far more important. He paused in his even pace from which sprawled messy paw-prints imprinted upon the snow-crusted earth. Stretching behind him was this tracery line of prints carved into the pallor surface of the earth. His head snapped towards the sound, and ears lowered fully to the top of his skull. Hackles rose and fur bristled involuntarily upward along the beast’s back in a wave of raven black, tail lowered between his legs for just an instant before it rose once more. Head still lowered, a small whine escaped the creatures black lips. It spoke a tale of loneliness and sorrow, but then the lone wolf stood to full height. A moment of thought was given before he responded. Jaukora’s black face lifted heavenward, as if he were gazing at the sky, then glacial blue eyes closed and for an instant maw parted. Rising from his parted jaws was a sorrowful sound—a sound of loss and grief that rose into the air and pierced it, more sharply and acutely than any dagger had the ability of doing. Then like a falcon diving for prey, his song fell earthward once more, lowing in pitch and tone until it returned to the musicians mouth and was sealed there. His howl ended, and his eyes reopened. Jaukora slowly started off again though now direction had been redecided and he headed towards the original howl, head held high and eyes slitted into silver daggers, like the moon at quarter full they shone.

Lichen had just closed her amber orbs for a peaceful sleep. Tranquil the forest was tonight, the soft scratching of a raccoons claws as he searched for some tasty morsel. With a mouse to her left scurried under leaf and snow to find a spot to hide from the ever watchful eyes and ears of the nocturnal predators. The tender hoot of an owl, as he heard said mouse taking off on gentle feathered wings, slicing through the crisp air without a sound. It was nevitable that he would find some prize tonight, and Lichen felt a brief guilt for whoever that unlucky soul may be. She pulled her tail into her face, shielding her black nose from the bite of the frost and the tempting smells that may entice her from the sleep she sought. Long was her journey and the paw-prints she left behind would find themselves buried in snow never leaving trace of her exsistance.
Just as she was beginning down that long, bleak tunnel that might lead her to a peaceful slumber a piercing howl filled the air, sharp and full of grief it was making her lift her great head towards the direction of the sound. It caused a shiver down her spine, first from excitement and then from the pain she felt for the maker of that tumulteous symphony. The flight or fight kicked in now and never would she run. Instead this driving force, was like a rough hand pushing and pulling her from the ground urging her forward to this new discovery.
Getting up slowly the earth clung to her coat, and she gave it a shake ridding herself of the clay and sod as she took a deep breath watching the gas exapnd before her like the warning smoke of a great fire in the night air. Her amber orbs glowed in the inky blackness, adrenaline rushed through every nerve ending making her hairs stand on end now. Waving up one after another from tail to neck, as her tail swung low near her ankles. Cupped ears moving left to right as the sound of heavy footfalls neared her. The maker of that chorus was coming her way. What joy! Someone having heard her call was now about to introduce themselves to her.
A Lupine smile fell over Lichen's lips as she began her trot, tail and head held high as she now made her journey through this thick forest, branches clumping together it seemed, brown and gray stragly things scratching through her pelt. Making her tight muscle beneath flesh jump and twitch, the bounce in her step clearly visible to anything tracking her in this forest. The snow seemed thick now, as her heart thudded hurriedly wanting to get the excitement over and done with dragging one huge paw over the other building up speed as she twirled ears on her head listening to that breath of her fellow lupine so gentle yet she heard it. "Some salvation at last? Remember your manners female." Her father'stenor voice boomed in her head as she sought out this wolf.

Jaukora's ears perked forward, cupping sounds of night. Nostrils flared with the scents of the forest and movement slowed to a stop. He considered for an instant on retreating from this stranger wolf, but that would be undignifying and he could never settle for that. The large male wolf faintly shook his head, and allowed his tail to become upraised and he started to trot through the snow covered forest, leaving a trail of prints behind. He knew where this other wolf was now, he could see her just through the brush. Head cocked his head to the side in a manner that was almost avian in nature, his eyes glittered like polished moonstones through the darkness, striking against the black fur of his face. Posture had taken one of non-aggression, even outwardly venturing friendliness. "Hello." He said. Jaukora was still placed at a distance, his multicolored fur darkened beneath the moonlight, while in the same instant it highlighted the streaks and hues of russet and grey across a pelt of pure raven black. Around his neck glinted the black leather collar, entailed with a single plait of silver, which winked with a black flame in the moonlight. A wolfish grin stretched across black lips, exposing the tips of delicately sharpened fangs, tapered to a needle point. "It's nice to see another wolf, when you travel alone for so long." He said, almost curiously. Jaukora felt loneliness curling deep within himself, brewing like a tempest at sea. It had seemed like so long sense he had conversed with another of his kind, and he was not always such a lonely creature. His eyes glittered like sapphire gemstones in the night, but they were laughing eyes. Laughing eyes filled with shadows and pain and regret, along with sorrow but most of all, they were filled with glacial fire.

Lichen kept her amber orbs faced front from the direction she assumed this wolf to be coming from. The tell tale differences in scent let her know he was a male, a rather large one at that. She was supposed to press her belly to the ground and hope that he wouldnt overpower her perhaps, come to take her along but that was her mother's thinking and she was her father's daughter. Soon now there was a hint of glossy black that stood out in the thick brush of the forest. As soon as he cocked his head she made out his figure halting left forepaw in the air still as the wind moved around them.
Crystals of snow made their way around, dancing, twirling kicking up their tango with leaves and stray mosses. His elegant voice reached her ears, amking them tingle with the pure adrenaline rush of hearing another of her kind. She knew not what to answer, one false move could send him running. Twas almost like a reverie, a sweet one at that. His deep ebony eyes, set in a handsome face and what was that? A glint of silver caught her eye, it was braided in a length of collar around his neck? How strange.
"Hello." Her voice was musical dewdrops falling from roses mixed with the soft tinkling of windchimes in a spring breeze. She placed down that weary paw letting it settle on the surface of the snow. Steel gray body poised in a friendly manner she took a tenative step forward keeping her eyes on his. The tip of her tail wagged slowly as she made her way forth.
"I would like a closer look, if you don't mind I assume you want the same. My name is Lichen may I be so bold to inquire as to who you are?" She was barely 10 steps from him now, that seemed like a resonable distance to stop, giving him the choice whether or not to make a motion in her direction.

For a moment no response was given, silence enveloped him, but soon thereafter came his voice once more, spoken soft into the night air as if he were half-afraid to shatter the almost silent air which was filled with the lullaby of night as it spread along with the descend of crystalline snow from the sky. “It’s very nice to meet you, Lady Lichen.” He said, and it was evident there was a smile on his face. It slowly spread across his features in the form of a wolfish grin. Jaukora stepped forward in a few long strides, his long legs graced the ground in such a fashion it became evident he was almost loping towards her. In this action, his features would become clearer at his approach, and it would become evident that he was not a pure black wolf, in fact the only pure black parts of his coat consisted of his face and the length of fur stretching along his back along with a tuft of fur that arched more like a mane than anything else. His pelt was marked with faint, shimmering hues of brown which was dark enough to be considered ebony, which nearly did appear black. But there were light, spider-webbing lines like cracks across an unblemished surface of polished obsidian, they were small lines of grayish silver, so light against the darkness of his pelt they shone with moonlight as if it had been turned to liquid and been pained across a new night sky in the form of lines. His bright blue eyes were almost sullen, mournful but at the same time they were amused. They were such bright, glacial eyes against the background of his face which would have become into perfect visibility, for he had closed the distance between so to only have a short, two or so feet separating them. It would be an easy distance for either of the wolves to leap at and attack, but of course he had no intention of this. He fell to his haunches after a moment, almost with a considering light he studied her elegant face, and her steel grey pelt, and shortly after he glanced skyward, towards the descending droplets of snow, which shimmed like an ethereal cloud on the earth. The stars were not visible through the haze of dark clouds above nor was the moon. “You may call me Jaukora, if you wish Lady Lichen.” He said softly, before looking downward once more and leveling his gaze with Lichen once more. His eyes were frozen, unreadable.

"Jaukora." She repeated his name softly, letting it fall off her tongue as a whispered prayer. His eyes settled on her face, and if her fur were not so dark he would see the crimson of the blush spread over her cheeks and up her long muzzle. Turning her face away at his gaze, she found herself gazing towards the same inky sky. Clouds flowing over the expanse of night blocking any view of moon or stars from their view. Lichen blew her breath quietly out of the corner of her eye watching him come to a sitting position. This was probably an indicator that she should sit as well, but mostly that at this close distance he would not lunge for her throat.
A few questions passed through her mind as her amber eyes searched over the graceful lines and colors of his pelt. Those glacial eyes of his standing out more than anything else. Perhaps if he smiled or opened his mouth the, sparkling white of teeth would offset it. Twas almost painful to look at the brightness his eyes displayed, compred to the inky darkness around them yet Lichen found herself unable to look away. His face was unreadable one thing she hated the most, not being able to anticipate the next move of an enemy or friend for that matter. The few spots of light that broke through the murky heavens shone on them now, casting a glint over her fur making it look more silver and a shadowy green.
Lichen slowly brought her back legs in, coming to a halting sit, she brushed the snow with a thick, bushy tail squinting her eyes delicately as the clear crystals kicked up near her face. This male was quiet he seemed only to speak, until spoken to or that could have just been for appearances sake. He reminded her of her father in a way, that air of regality that seemed to be his aura. The smart thing to do would be to learn about him as much as she could, then perhaps form some sort of alliance in this land they never know what they might come against.
Clearing her throat, the sound seemed so loud in this tight space between them, the claws on her forepaws scratching the frozen vapor before them. "Do you know this place? I'm afraid I do not so...the company should you choose to accept me will be well appreciated." Was she too forward? She didnt know it was always best to speak your mind so why did this situation make it any diferent?

His black face was unreadable. Emotionless at the question, but within his glacial eyes a hint of amusement caught in the depths of liquid-like irises. "So quickly you seem to trust, Lady Lichen." He said a bit bemusedly. "And perhaps you might find me the untrustable sort, in the past of course." He cocked his head slightly to the side now, studying Lichen beneath his bright, glasslike optics. Perchance, in this dim lighting Lichen's eyes might have been able to pick up the tracery marks of battle, scarred as slender silver marks across his pelt. They coated his muzzle, small slashes and others larger while they also covered his haunches, shoulders, neck and legs. Scars. Around his neck the leather collar with the inlaid plate of silver reflected the light that seeped ethereal from above. "Same as you though, I believe. I am a wanderer, and do not know the land well, but if you wish my company I shall travel with you, but I cannot guarantee I am of great company myself, Lady Lichen." Jaukora said lightly, but at the same time his stomach knotted with vertigo. "Where are you headed, anyway?" He asked after a moment of silence. His eyes were distantly sad, filled with a mournful longing of some unnamed emotion that could have been for trust or friendship, or even belonging.

Lichen didnt know whether to take offense at his words or look at herself closer to examine and find the truth, knowing her temper the first seemed like a better option. "Shush! Don't you dare female, the male was merely calling it as he saw fit." She growled lightly not to be taken for a challenge or anything of the sort but in slight frustration.
"I wouldnt say overly trusting. I simply don't feel my instincts telling me to flee or to be wary and for that reason alone I don't see a reason why I shouldnt. Though I will admit I can take good care of myself." She held her regal head high, as high as she could that is, the male was still bigger than her and he looked to have enough muscle to prove it. Still she was cocky at times and this was certainly one of them. Flashing him her pearly whites set against bright pink gums with; her contrasting inky lips Lichen was feeling good that he would accompy her at least.
Stretching her legs out in what could be taken as a playing position she wagged the tip of her tail slowly, amber eyes roaming over his face and neck. There were some tale-tell scars there and she wondered if he was a hunter or a fighter in the life he came from. Telling by the ones on his face no antler or hoof inflicted those...this Jaukora was most definitely was a fighter. A light hint of fear creapt up her spine making the hairs on her neck stand on end as she came to a full stand shaking her thick winter coat. "What's that thing there on his neck Lichen? You should ask him." This probably wasnt the best time to tell him she could hear and talk to her father in her head, yet when he asked her something he expected to be answered. Turning away from her newfound travel companion, the she wolf mumbled to herself answering the comforting voice in her head. "I'll ask him later now isnt the best time, time for sleep goodnight father." With a brief humph he quieted down leaving silence in her head once more.
"To answer your question Jaukora I really don't know where I am going. I follow the food and as far as I know it went north. For now I think we should rest, there is a storm coming in and we shall be protected in the forest near this knoll I found." Her body facing away from him, Lichen turned her face back letting her expression soften as the pale silver light of the moon reflected from her orbs. "We could dig a small den keep warm together, the tempreture is dropping I know you can feel it." As if on cue a shiver kicked in making her flesh break out in goosebumps as she waited for an answer from this mysterious male.
