anyways, the books basic plot is.
In the vast abyss that is the universe, a single Being, neither God nor mortal, came to a barren wasteland of a planet. The planet held nothing, not life, nor law. The Being studied this planet for awhile and inside itself it felt a tug of remembrance of a planet full of life.
What a beautiful place that planet had been! With strong creatures, green forests and stunning rivers of blue. Seeing this barren wasteland, the entity decided to make this desolate place beautiful as well. She created water on the world in order to sustain it, but soon She realized the water had flooded the world. In slight desperation She raised the land in three spots, thus creating the three continents we know today. She then used Her divine power to create order on the planet. This She did in the forms of night and day and the seasons. Next, the Being created animals and people, using the knowledge She had gained from the world before. When She was satisfied with Her results, She pulled from Her glorious wings three single feathers. Each feather became a guardian deity, one for each of Her continents. It was the job of these guardians to protect the law and balance of the continent they were assigned to. Life prospered and peace was had for all.
For a long while the races that inhibited the three continents prospered. However, one continent's leader decided he wanted to rule all the continents. The land of evil, Arthea, as it's called today, was ruled by a hateful and power-hungry man who wanted to rule all of the Kingdoms. Due to his greed, the Great War began.
The war went on for centuries, slowly destroying the beautiful world the Being had created. With the entity nowhere to be found, the guardians were left with the task of ceasing the War. However, the entity had been watching over the proceedings indeed, and was furious at the carnage the people were wreaking on Her world. In rage, She began to destroy them. She would kill the evil the beings had created and restart the world.
The people tried to fight against Her, but She was far too powerful. Their only hope was the guardians. The foolish beings, blinded by greed and blood lust, continued fighting in the war only to be slain by the enraged entity. The rest of the people prayed to the guardians to stop Her. The three guardians answered the people’s prayers; however, the entity was still too strong for even them. Then when all hope seemed lost, the guardians discovered a new plan to imprison the entity in an iron coffin. They succeeded, but at the loss of most of their power.
Although they are little seen, the guardians still walk the earth, each governing his or her kingdom.
In the kingdom of Weyoand, Celila serves as a spirit of fertility and growth. Her kingdom blooms in a perpetual summer, and flowers bloom where she treads. Weyoand’s harvests are always plentiful, but all is not well. Despite Celila’s many generous gifts, she is by nature distracted and frivolous, and leaves matters of governance to mere mortals, many of whom are corrupt beyond redemption. While Celila is glad to ensure that the vineyards produce the ripest grapes and that the fields are always filled with golden grain, the rich profit from the opulence while the majority of the populace starves, all without her knowing.
It is from the Kingdom of Arthea, the lands of evil, that all demons are said to originate from. Shin'en megami controls this dark kingdom in the background. She is a being of darkness who rarely allows sunshine, which is why the people have had to make do with alchemists creating artificial light, even so, she is the one who originally gave the gift of alchemy to Arthea. She is also the source of its’ powers so the people pray to her so their alchemy and magic may flourish under her rule. Arthea's landscape is cold and barren, most of the areas consisting of deserts with black sand and snow capped northern wilds in which alchemy is forbidden. The land is home to the end of the world. In the Northern lands a large hole in the ground is protected by a seal that Shin'en megami controls. The hole is said to be home to the demons that infest the land. Because the guardian's powers have weakened, demons continually slip through this hole. Arthea is consisted of many small villages of the different races. The main power is controlled by a king and his army that is consistently challenged by smaller armies. The army also suffers internal power struggles. The people of this poor land are never at peace, and food is always an issue in the kingdom of Arthea. Shin'en megami rarely appears in person although she has nine separate servants. While most of these servants guard certain key areas within Arthea some roam the lands causing mischief. Others yet even do their best to help the people. Currently one of these servants is tracking down a human who has obtained demonic powers through a forbidden alchemy.
The arts are what the kingdom of Sathrien is famous for. Often the State produces wonderful musicians, beautiful artists, and inspiring writers known throughout the land for their talents. Their Guardian, Chante, is known for her voice and her poetry. She is both a harsh and kind, depending on the melody of the day. Her eyes see nothing through the film that covers them, but still she hears all. It is said that if one were to stand next to her they themselves would hear the gentle sound of the violin she was known to play. Although music always plays in Sathrien, there is also a cord of dissonance among the people. As Chante is blind, she is blind to their needs in terms of food and protection. So focused is she on her arts she has a tendency to let her people fend for themselves, thus creating tribes promoting anarchy instead of structure. There is constant power struggle in the kingdom of Sathrien, making it easy for anyone to rise to power in one of the many nomadic tribes.
Still, the entity waits in her sealed prison, rage pouring from her very soul. If one tried to release Her, who knows what could happen…
