So yeah, vote and discuss? This pole was inspired by a conversation in the Cbox. Apparently in real life, if animals other than birds, insects, and bats had wings, it'd be useless because they are structurally unfit to use them. While this is definitely true, one would wonder how airplanes, very heavy, could fly at all (although there's no argument on how it works XD). But in mythology, winged horses, or pegasus could fly. Gryphons could fly. Imagining that a wolf could fly is no less ridiculous.
What do you think? Do you think if wolves had wings, they could fly in real life? Why not? What about other animals?

Well,it could be possible,if the wing and the shoulder blade where two separate Cause, the Wing would have to fit in a socket, and if wolves really had wings, then their bodies would have adapted to fit the Wings.

I dunno about the feather wings, but one of my characters has wings made of pure fire. >> While scientifically impossible, if magic existed, I explain that she uses the heat from her wings to rise. Ta-dah, magic science. xD

Do multiple formed beings count? I don't have any which have wings in their wolf forms, but Ginhato and Nakuokami have wings in their alternate forms.

Sonic Boom probably wouldn't fit here. Her wings are mechanical, so they aren't real. They are just attached to the suit. And there is one pair on top, and the other underneath, acting more like a insects wings. But I think wolves would be able to fly with wings. If they had them, then their bodies would be structured to maintain flight, and hold themselves up and level while flying. Just throwing them on a wolf might turn out bad. But being born with them is a different story. Their bodies would adapt to the positioning, and be able to walk and fly. Yet, I think their appearance might look a little different then the canine appearance.

I'm sorry, but I'm learning ornithology right now and this is very tempting. Birds have a lot of features that help them fly, and I mean a LOT. They have wings (obviously), tails, feathers, special bones, huge lungs, light hearts, and even a light digestive system. Yeah, that's right, the reason why bird poop is so weird is because they fly. You see, in order to fly you have to be really light, which means you can't be very dense. Bird bones have pockets of air inside them, and huge, thin lungs are very light. Some birds even have air bladders that they use to make themselves less dense. They're digestive system is designed specially to keep the bird from being too heavy after eating a nice meal, so a bird's digestive system doesn't focus as much on the things that land animals' do. So that takes out wolves, who are as dense and heavy as you can get. But what if wolves somehow got light enough to fly? I mean, they would have to have bad ass big wings, but what if they could? Well, wolves would have a hard time controlling their flight. The feathers of a bird's tail are very vital in a bird's flight, and wolves just have bushy little things. Another reason, which a lot of scientists stand by as their shot answer, is that a creature just can't have more than one limb per joint. An arguing statement is that the wings would actually be applied to a hard bone all birds have in their breasts. It's long flat, and is almost like natural armor inside the bird. This bone has a couple obscure reasons, but I also think it supports most of the wing. If a wolf had a bone like that, it probably could use that as a source for his wing and it simply emerges from his shoulder. He'd have to be a wolf on steroids, but just maybe. That's all I have to say. I'm not taking a side on this debate, but I can agree that it would be really cool if wolves could fly.
