Chapter 8
Slowly the embers of the once bright fire smoldered within the ashes of their died out brethren. Above the thick canopy of trees, the sun was slowly rising above the horizon. It's warm rays basking the lands within light. Yet Shadow and Uri had indeed chosen their resting spot wisely. No sunlight fell anywhere near them as they slumbered peacefully. Everything was serene, the birds in the trees chirped their songs as an annoyed chipmunk chattered angrily.
Yet this silence would not remain for too much longer. A shadows figure was slowly approaching the slumbering vampires. The horrid smell of rotting flesh filled the air, causing the slumbering Shadow to twitch his nose and rose over. The creature slowly approached his first target, the son of Lucio. A long dagger was slowly drawn, barely making a noise as it slid out. The hidden being began to crouch over his soon-to-be-victim. The gleaming dagger lifted up and prepared to plunge forth into the sleeping vampire.
Yet suddenly the creature would let out a howl of pain as a small blade flew through the air to embed into it's arm. Quickly the being backed up and franticly tried to pry the cold blade from it's flesh. Soon it succeeded and turned to face it's attacker. There stood Uri, another dagger in his hand, ready to be flung forth. He looked in disgust at the being. It reeked of burnt flesh that now slowly disintegrated. A white porcelain mask hid it's face.
The commotion had awoken Shadow from his peaceful sleep. From instinct, Shadow drew out his sword and slashed at his attacker in the same motion. Quickly the being dodged back, the blade cutting through it's clothing. With a vicious hiss, the creature leaped forth toward Shadow and Uri. Quickly the two vampires stood ready as all three forces clashed together. Blade crashed to blade which cut to flesh.
The creature delivered a powerful blow to Uri who flew through the air and crashed into a tall tree. As leaves fell down upon him, the vampire remained unconscious beneath the mighty trunk. Shadow looked to his friend for a moment before leaping at their attacker full of anger. There was the loud sound of metal bashing off metal as the creature easily blocked Shadow's hasty attack. Powerfully it struck Shadow as it struck Uri. Yet Shadow was wary of the attack this time and skidded across the ground, holding his throbbing ribs.
The creature let out a foul laugh behind it's mask. It's voice was serpentine-like and colder than a winter night. Slowly words came from it's hidden mouth, masculine in tone.
"Jusssst like your father. A complete idiot."
The comment about his father caused Shadow to leap forth again at the unknown beast. His sword swung powerful at the wretched soul, but the attack was deflected easily. Again and again Shadow struck at the beast, each time his attacks were blocked with ease. This thing was toying with him.
"Fight me you coward!"
Again Shadow swung his sword and again the creature blocked, laughing coldly at the young vampire. Powerfully he struck Shadow across the head with his bare fist. The unexpected blow left the vampire open to attacks. Over and over the creature hit Shadow without mercy. Finally he sent the vampire sprawling through the air to land on the ground, writhing in pain.
Ever so slowly the creature walked over to the injured Shadow. It pressed it's boot into the vampire's broken ribs, drawing out a gasp of pain. The creature chuckled as it put a hand to it's mask.
"Time for you to ssssee the faccccce of your killer."
The delicate mask was drawn away to reveal the most horrid of sights. What had once been a beautiful, male vampire's face was no more. The flesh had been burned away to reveal the raw muscle. With no lips, the vampire's fangs could be seen in the dim light, black and charred. Shadow's eyes opened in horror as the monstrosity approached.
Slowly that dagger was raised yet again, ready to plunge into Shadow's chest. Yet as the blade fell through the air, the chest of the vampire jumped. Blood began to drip from his exposed fangs, it's color of the darkest kind. With a groan the being fell down to the ground, the bone handle of a knife protruding from it's spine.
Uri slowly walked over to his friend and extended a helping hand. They both looked upon the unconscious being. Without voicing a word, Uri went over to the being. It was a vampire, so it's wounds would heal. Yet the blond haired vampire cut open the back of the creature. He tore loose a piece of the being spine, potentially paralyzing it. With a nod both of the young vampires grabbed one of the vile being's arms and dragged it into an area where the sun would soon bask it.
Once the deed was done, the two went back to where they had been by the now dead fire. The two looked at each other for a moment. Shadow was the first to speak this time, still amazed at what had just happened.
"You want first watch?"
Uri nodded slowly to his friends words. There was nothing either could think of to say. So Shadow simply laid upon his makeshift bedroll and closed his eyes, slumber soon capturing him.
