the Mutatio wolf
Goth, Beta Male of Shinkou
Pronunciation: Mew-TAH-tee-oh
Information: Mutatios are nearly extinct now. When their breed thrived, however, they could live anywhere, except jungles, deserts, and tundras. They preferred living in temperate forests but could also be found in mountainous regions. Mutatios liked sharing their land with other Mutatio packs, forming small civilizations of wolves, but this closeness inspired more belligerence.
Appearance: Mutatios are usually dark colors; shades of grey and black and navy. By contrast, their eyes are bright colors; most common are gold, green, violet, and light blue. All Mutatios possess huge feathered wings that are usually the same colors and patterns of their pelts. They are very large, very imposing wolves.
Average Height: 4'
Average Weight: 200 lbs
Raven, Beta Female of Shinkou, Goth's mate
Lifespan: Mutatios can live up to 100 years during a single lifetime. However, they can be resurrected after they die of old age, given a proper ritual. The number of times they can be reborn is infinite, but usually the elderly ones decided to die for good after about 8 or 9 life-cycles.
History: Mutatios liked orderliness in their packs, which functioned more as democracies than as monarchies. The Alphas made decisions based on their personal wisdom and popular opinion. Though packs were clearly defined, most Mutatios did not mind having more than one pack live in the same contained area. The Alphas of these packs would take turns being the ultimate Alpha-pair as time went on. As ideal as this system may sound, it fell apart frequently. Natural pack pride led to resentment with other Alphas tried to rule over them, and this led to many battles and even a few bloody wars.
The Mutatios did not fight themselves, however. For centuries, when the world was plagued by free-running demons, they defended the land against these vile creatures. Many a battle was fought between wolves and demons, with the wolves usually coming out on top.
There was a period of time, about four centuries ago, when the demons nearly seized total control of the world. In this era, the demons slaughtered many of their strongest enemies: the Mutatios. Even though Mutatios can be reborn after dying of old age, they die for good if they are killed. The Mutatio breed was slowly being wiped out. A few good, strong Mutatios—such as Shinkou Ookami's very own Beta Guardian Goth—led the charge against the demons again. Slowly but surely, the wolves prevailed, and were able to send most of the demons back to their world to stew and sulk.
Those few Mutatios who survived the demonic massacres continued with their democratic ways. But in their final years, they fought many a vicious battle with one another that they practically killed themselves off. To this day, very few purebred Mutatios survive, and they are loners, sometimes mercenaries. Gone are the days of community and democracy. Most of these remaining Mutatios have bred with other species, keeping the Mutatio gene alive—barely.

Magics: If a Mutatio is dying of old age (usually around 100 years old), a simple ritual may be performed to ensure that this Mutatio’s soul and body are reincarnated as a newborn Mutatio pup. In addition to this phoenix-like quality, most Mutatios are blessed with one power of transformation (indeed, mutatio means "change or transformation" in Latin). These powers vary, but they all have something to do with change.
Beliefs: Mutatios didn't believe in much beside the way the world works on its own. The one exception is their reverence of the Black Raven, Karasis, who bears their souls from one life to the next. They also believe in Karasis' eternal foe, Mánu, who is the bringer of death. The ritual they perform at the end of one Mutatio's life is simply a libation of a little blood and a request to Karasis to start their life anew. They then spit on the ground so that Mánu does not take them away to death forever. Beyond that, each individual Mutatio may believe what he or she wills.
