HUMAN/ANTHRO WORLDS CHARACTER
Name: Lorelei (pronounced LOR-ih-lye; lye rhymes with cry)
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Sub-Race: N/A
Appearance: Lorelei is a beautiful and fair woman, even for her age (42 years old): she has captivating green eyes, long golden hair, and creamy white skin. She stands about 5'6" and maintains a steady weight at 135 lbs. She usually wears long grey-green robes (the color of stormy seas), and conceals her head in a hood. She wears a small flute as a necklace around her neck, but usually keeps it hidden in her robes.
Personality: Lorelei used to be an ambitious, unstoppable mage in her youth, doing whatever it took to get her way. She had no pride when it came to getting where she wanted to go. She used her cunning wit, her extraordinary talent, even her feminine wiles and sex appeal to get the results she wanted. Since marrying and having a child, however, she has become more practical, humble, and affectionate. She loved her family to no end. Now, she is jaded because of what Berlach did to her, but she still loves her family despite the betrayal. She would do anything for those she loved, because the way she sees it, her life is just about over. She's only sticking around to help others.
Magic: Psychic and Physical. Each of her spells is activated by a different song, played on her miniature flute she carries with her. If she ever loses the flute, she could still hum the spells, but they would be significantly weaker.
-Spells:
Fusion: She can meld two solid objects together. She can even do this with living creatures, if they have been sedated or subdued.
Transformation: She can change the shape of a solid object, but it must have the same mass no matter what.
Distortion: A basic illusion spell that would distort whatever is being looked at into something unrecognizable. She can use this to hide people's faces if necessary.
Lullaby: The right song can soothe a person or animal to sleep. She can even affect up to twenty people. The effects are gradual.
Puppetmaster: For a brief amount of time (an hour at most), Lorelei can take control of a weak-minded person's motor functions (movement and speech). She must be able to catch the person off guard; if the person is of strong mind and can fight her off, then her hold will break.
Telekinesis: Lorelei can control a few objects with her mind, being able to stop missiles (arrows, bullets, etc.) and to lift some objects (no more than 200 pounds). She can only sustain this control for ten seconds at a time.
Memory Alteration: On a low level, Lorelei can confuse a target's memories, either by suppressing them temporarily or scrambling them. How long the effect lasts depends on strength of mind and various circumstances, but it is all temporary, lasting anywhere from five minutes to five years.
Biography: Lorelei came from humble beginnings, being the daughter of a fisherman in Escavas. It became clear early on in her life that she possessed incredible magical talent. Her mother was appalled, but her father was proud, a rare opinion for an Escavan. He convinced his wife to save up enough money to send her to school in the distant but renowned Ebernum, White City. His wife was simply relieved to have Lorelei out of their hair before the neighbors started talking. When Lorelei was ten years old, her parents finally had enough money to send her to the Ebernum Magical Institute (EMI).
At EMI, Lorelei quickly became the favorite of all the teachers. She was so charming and smart, and she excelled rapidly. By the time Lorelei was 18, she had mastered all of the lessons taught at EMI - but craved even more. She began to travel all over the world, funded by the excited EMI. She sought out legendary magical adepts and learned from them. Whenever she was barred, she would stoop to any means to get by the obstacles. Though she preserved her virginity, she used sex appeal to enchant men and then quickly glided by them. Simply by overcoming obstacles did she learn how to perfect her abilities to control other beings.
During her travels, she found an abandoned dragon hatchling. Intrigued more by what the experience could teach her than affectionate towards the infant, she took him along with her. This began the period of her life when Lorelei traded ambition for affection. As the dragon grew, she felt a love for him, and decided to settle down for a little while. She settled in a cottage in the middle of the wilderness surrounding Escavas, deciding to return close to home but not so close as to be scalded by the burning prejudice of the natives.
Lorelei would have to go into town now and again to retrieve supplies or to visit her parents. She demonstrated her magical abilities to them only once, which was enough to make her father burst with pride and to shock her mother into hateful disbelief. It was during these periodic visits that she began to be courted by Berlach, who was then a young man with a life goal of opening an inn in Escavas. Lorelei at first rejected him, but he was so persistent in his efforts that she, admiring his obstinancy, accepted. Their courtship flourished, but Berlach was second in Lorelei's heart to her cherished dragon.
The dragon grew and grew. Soon Lorelei had to resort to a spell to cloak the dragon from the range of sight and hearing of the Escavans all day and night. At the same time, a secret religious group, headed by a vicious man who was known simply as Purge, got wind of Lorelei's magic powers. Purge hired a skilled, sleek assassin, Caliga, to destroy the mage. Neither Purge nor Caliga knew of Lorelei's dragon.
Caliga made his attack, but at the same time the dragon, sensing danger to his beloved mistress, broke free from his spell and attacked Caliga. His tail pierced Caliga's heart just as Caliga's weapon pierced the dragon's. Lorelei came out in time to see this double-attack and reacted quickly, using her powers of fusion to join both creatures together to preserve their lives. The dragon's subconscious mind was submerged beneath Caliga's superior mind, but Caliga's body was thereafter fused with draconic traits. During the moment of fusion, however, the two minds clashed, creating an insane, confused creature. In an attempt to calm the insanity, Lorelei wiped the memories of both creatures, though imperfectly, as she was in a rush. The newly formed creature was still overwhelmed, and ran away from Lorelei into the wilderness. She was crushed to have lost her dear dragon and angered at whoever had attempted to murder her.
In the wake of the event, Lorelei decided it was time to start over with a new life. She married Berlach and helped him start his inn, which she christened "The Rising Dragon" in memory of her beloved friend. Berlach liked the title, which he called "creative," and before long, their inn was flourishing alongside the many other inns of Escavas. Soon Lorelei was pregnant, and sought out a fortune-teller to predict her child's life.
The fortune-teller prophesied that the baby would be a girl, who was marked by destiny to continue a great legend, because of her unique heritage. The fortune-teller told Lorelei to name her daughter "Mistweaver," a name which bespoke the girl's fate. Lorelei was pleased, but she hid the prophecy from her husband, who she knew would react negatively to the news. Still, when the girl was born, Lorelei named her "Mistweaver," as she'd been told, but during the girl's life, this was shortened to the more normal "Misty."
One night, about seven or eight years later, Lorelei was overcome by nostalgia. She took out her flute and played a stone into a likeness of her old dragon. It was the first time she had used magic in years, and so it took her a few efforts before she got it right, but the result was marvelous. Unfortunately, Berlach at that moment walked in and witnessed the "unnatural" event. He exploded in rage, demanding that Lorelei tell him the truth. She confessed her magical abilities, and, in a moment of heightened emotion, even admitted that she once owned a dragon for which their inn was named. Berlach was aghast, and sent her away in a fit of utmost fury, claiming that Lorelei was living a most horrible lie.
Lorelei was heartbroken, but complied and left, taking her dragon-stone with her but nothing else. She was unaware that Berlach told Misty she had died, but she knew that she did not dare attempt to contact her daughter again, lest Berlach find out. A wanderer again, but by necessity and not by choice, Lorelei traveled everywhere, unwilling to settle down again. As long as she was on the move, she did not have to remember the family she had lost. She bought robes to conceal her appearance at all times, and even passed through villages and towns under the alias "the Grey Maiden."
She was convinced her life was over, since she had lost all she cared for. She still had her magic, but she only used it to help others. Even in times of utmost necessity, she refused to employ her powers for her own benefit. Sometimes she encountered harsh prejudice, other times compassion, but she continues to flee. She has helped normal people, but has also helped young mages much like she had been escape the scorching bias of humans. She is aware of religious groups similar to the one in Escavas headed by Purge, and it has become her new life goal to eliminate these groups' influence. She has been sucked into a kind of rebellion against such fierce discrimination. As long as she has a goal and others to help, she can live.
