the Kolohenki, the Cave-Demon
Pronunciation: KO-lo-EN-kee
Commonly Known As: Cave-demon
Information: The only known kolohenki in existence (they are most frequently known as cave-demons) live as a clan beneath the Northern Mountains of Shinkou Ookami. Over time, they have created a complicated series and network of tunnels underground. The main clan of cave-demons resides in chambers surrounding a massive underground waterfall and lake -- they call it Korian's Falls and Dalia's Lake. This central chamber is the lifesource of the cave-demons, who live off of the purified water and various fish that live there. They also eat certain fungi that can grow without light. Most of their chambers are lit by a species of moss that gives off its own bluish-green glow, although some important chambers (like the monarchs' hall and the lake area) are lit by magical jewels that shine like stars.
Magic: Shapeshifting. Any cave-demon can take any form he or she wishes and change it whenever. However, it takes considerable energy to change one's form, so generally cave-demons stay with their preferred forms for most of their lives. They can breed with any species of animal, as long as they are in that species' form.
Average Height: Since cave-demons have such a variety of species, there is no one average height. However, most choose animals that are between 2 and 4 feet tall.
Average Weight: Similarly, there is no average weight among the cave-demons.
Appearance: Though cave-demons can become any species of animal, they usually like to add flourishes to their appearance to point out their uniqueness and difference. For instance, they might add an extra tail or two, become unnatural colors, or (for the upper-class ones) lavish jewelry all over their person. As a result, many of them look very outlandish -- similar but quite different from the real thing.
Lifespan: Most cave-demons will only live 100 years at most, but those of royal blood can live for several centuries. Their reproduction rate is slow, though, so they are never overpopulated.
History: Cave-demons have been around as long as wolves have, perhaps even longer. The only records of their early history are drawings on the cave walls, which no one has really attempted to interpret. It is assumed that these early kolohenki had created the vast network of tunnels beneath Shinkou's Northern Mountains that remains to this day, but it is possible that with the earth's movement, this was actually a much later development. Many of the tunnels and the chambers they link to remain unexplored, and some of them have been taken over by other groups for their own purposes.
Around 20 years ago, during the current monarchs' rule, a faction of the cave-demons split off, discontent with simply staying Underground. They wanted to rise to the Surface and take over territory of Shinkou for their own. In the only interspecies battle within memory (though probably not the only one to have happened), the rebels faced off against the loyalists. The loyalists won out and sent the rebels scattered in obscure tunnels throughout the Underground. Bitter, these disbanded rebels take to attacking whomever passes their way, and it is possible that some have spread to the Surface in the vain hope to pursue their original goal.
Currently, the cave-demons live in peace beneath the Northern Mountains of Shinkou Ookami, ruled by the gentle and guiding King Melkior and Queen Valkyrie.
Beliefs: The cave-demons believe in two high deities: their almighty god, Korian, and their almighty goddess, Dalia. Korian and Dalia are lifemates, and they are considered the creators of the kolohenki species. Generally, Dalia is perceived as the omnipotent benefactress, and Korian is perceived as the deliverer of justice. However, cave-demons are more spiritual than religious; they have named their main sources of life after these deities, and they have two or three annual festivals in honor of Dalia and Korian, but beyond that, they do not dote on the divinities. Cave-demons do not mind taking their creators' names in vain, swearing such things as "By the glory of Dalia," "Korian's blood," "Great Dalia Above," or, simply, "Kor!" Some, more religious-minded cave-demons believe that there are the gods' avatars on this plane -- representatives of Korian and Dalia's will who meddle with mortals' affairs. This is not, however, a popular idea. Most cave-demons simply trust in the wisdom and guidance of the royal blood.
Credits: All credits are to me, Felypsa. Anyone can make a cave-demon, but you should notify me when you do, so I can add your character's name to the list.
