This is a short guide to the workings of spirits, important magical creatures that exist in the world of Shinkou Ookami.
Welcome to Shinkou friend. I shall be your guide while you make your journey through these lands. Have you seen the glowing creatures that fly about like the one hovering here by my shoulder? These are what we call Spirits. They are not like ghosts and undead lost souls, Shinkou spirits were never dead. They are living elementals of magic and because they exist, we are able to use magic in turn.
You may question this spirit here yourself, but I doubt it would answer. Spirits and creatures like us can not understand each other, but spirits do not mind our company despite the lack of communication.
If you are one of those who were not born with the use of magic, I would recommend seeking out a spirit. Unless of course you don't want to use magic, then that's quite alright as well. Spirits will leave you alone if you want nothing to do with them, but for those who wish to learn magic, it is easy enough to attract a spirit's attention, as they always stick close to those who want to learn. In giving the gift of magic, a spirit will merge with your soul. This is a simple and painless process that enables those who cannot use magic to weild it. While the spirit becomes a part of you, it will go into a deep sleep, enabling you to use its magic, yet remaining so quiet in a way that you would wonder if it had ever merged with you at all. Spirits are always more than eager to merge, as while they can use small magics on their own, it is the merging of souls that enables you to tap into their strongest sources of magic.
Unmerged spirits are very picky and as such will avoid creatures who have merged with spirits that are a conflicting element; such as fire spirits often avoiding water spirits. It is not rare that a second spirit will merge with a creature who has already attained a spirit, but other spirits no longer wish to merge after this, as this seems to be the maximum a soul can handle after merging twice.
