Maledetto means: "The Damned." In Italian.
They are a band of miscreants with ...different morals then most. They work like mercenaries, deal in dark things in exchange for resources. Many of them are murders, cannibals, spies, and other such things. So they offer their services to those that don’t want to get their paws dirty. They accept most personalities, as long as the individual can bring something to the ‘family’. They are ranked due to the level of respect that they have within the pack, may it be through brains or brawn. They do not like to be crossed, and make sure to deal with transgressors accordingly. If they gain nothing from a deal or job, odds are they will not take it. They strive to establish order, fight for complete control and influence, and demonstrate a propensity for violence. The pack, and all it's members, share a common organizational structure and code of conduct. Traditionally, only males can become a Don, though in recent times there have been a few females assuming the responsibilities of dead/enslaved Don relatives. Membership and rank in the pack are not hereditary. Most new higher ranking wolves are not related to their predecessor. A mercenaries legitimate occupation, if he has any, generally does not affect his prestige within said group. Historically, most Don's were stationed in menial tasks, and many bosses did not work at all, but in recent times professionals such as healers and mediators have been found among them. A prospective Don is carefully tested for obedience, discretion and ruthlessness. He is almost always required to commit murder as his ultimate trial.
Ranks:
Don/Donna (Alpha): The leader of the pack, they make the big decisions, concerning the whole of the pack. They are who everyone ends up reporting back to. They will determine the fate of the pack in any situation. Usually older, and riddled with the most wisdom, pride and cunning of them all. The will of the Don must be met, lest there be consequences.
Underboss (Beta): They control most of the pack aside the Don and the Consigliere. They are the main heads of business who move the pawns on the board. If something were to happen to the Don, one of these will take over as commander. They all answer to the Don.
Consigliere (Advisers): Advisers to the Don, as well as a sort of body guard. Once established, at least one member must cater to the Don's will that is not in relation to business. They will offer advice and guidance, as well as anything else the Don needs.
Capos (Commanders): Capos are generally commanders of the lower ranking associates. They will be the part of the chain that the associates go to for jobs or orders. They can also be the voice of the associates, a representative so to speak. They report to the under bosses.
Garanti (Enforcers): Enforcers control the soldiers, primarily. They know when to act with force and when to remain passive. If there is a pack rivalry, they with the soldiers and hit squad, are the ones who deal with the problems. They answer to the Underboss.
Specialisti (Specialist): These are individuals with a unique talent. They have to be named by the Don themselves and answer to the Consigliere, or the Don. To be a specialist, you must prove that you do indeed have a unique power or trait.
SquadreColpo (Hit squads): An Elite group of soldiers that excel in assassination and covert operations. They must be strong and cunning to claim their targets with little to no problems. They answer to the Enforcers and the Consigliere.
Soldati (Soldiers): Strong warriors that respect power. They protect the pack when needed and are a very powerful defensive force. Most of the dirty work is done by them. They answer to the Enforcers.
Soci (Associates): These individuals are used mainly for accepting contracts and public relations. They are charismatic and clever, always trying to make a deal that will better benefit the pack. They work and answer to the Capo primarily.
Delinquente (Thugs): Meat headed individuals that have not yet proven themselves as soldiers. They will be called on for smaller jobs that do not require much in the lines of strategy. They answer to any of the middle or upper ranks, but primarily the soldiers and enforcers.
Inferiori (Underlings): Individuals that are in training under a certain group, usually associates of specialists. They have not earned a reputation yet, but can work closely with middle ranks to further their experience. They answer to any middle or upper rank.
Grugniti (Grunts): The omegas that have barely even proved themselves as worthy members. They are fodder and entertainment. Sometimes they are prisoners being forced to work for whom ever. They answer to anyone higher ranking than them.
The Laws:
1. No one can present himself directly to the Don, there must be a third person to do it. (usually the Consigliere) However this can be wavered if the Don himself speaks to you first.
2. Never look at the mates of our friends. (Female mates)
3. Never be seen with 'the good guys'. aka: Shinkou/Akeru (?)
4. Don't go to very public places.
5. Always being available for the Maledetto is a duty - even if your mate is about to give birth.
6. Appointments must absolutely be respected.
7. Mates must be treated with respect. (Female mates)
8. When asked for any information, the answer must be the truth.
9. Resources cannot be appropriated if it belongs to one of our own, or another "Family."
Omertà: The code of silence:
Omertà is a code of silence that forbids Maledetto from betraying their comrades to the authorities. The penalty for transgression is death, and relatives of the turncoat may also be murdered. All members are eventually made to make this vow.
Forbidden crimes:
Certain types of crimes are forbidden by Maledetto, either by members or freelance criminals within their domains. Maledetto are generally forbidden from committing theft (burglary, mugging, etc.). Kidnapping is also generally forbidden, even by non-members, as it attracts a great deal of public hostility. These rules have been violated from time to time, both with and without the permission of Senior Don's. Also, cheating/affairs are resented within 'The Family' and any offender is usually outcast, or demoted. The reasons for this are: For the lack of respect and trust. Some of the key factors in this pack, do not step paw upon that track.
Claiming Land: Toai Ruins.
History:
Chapter One: The Beginning.
The genesis of Maledetto is hard to trace because the family are very secretive and do not keep historical records of their own. It is widely believed that its seeds were planted in the upheaval of Shinkou Ookami's transition out of feudalism. The Three Kingdoms of Giaku and Shinkou/Akeru couldn't fully enforce law and order, and many groups, from bandits to small clans, used violence to plunder or settle disputes.
Much of the Maledetto's early activity centered around the lucrative hit squads, exporting assassins throughout the Giaku region, whose fragile production system made it quite vulnerable to extortion. What is probably the earliest detailed account of Maldetto activity comes from the memoirs of one such Underboss, whom had been secretly logging such events in any way he could. After out casting the defiant brute, Salvator (Don at the time) received threatening behavior, demanding that they bring him back. Two successive replacements Salvator took on met a savage end by unknown forces, and everyone refused to believe it came from the former 'Man of Honor'. They soon learned that this 'Man of Honor' was part of a group much like their own, another family. Many such groups did the same as they did, giving their skills in exchange for resources. These groups however, appeared to have allies in the Shinkou/Akeru regions. With the pressure mounting, Salvator gave up the game, and migrated his family further and further away from the three Kingdoms.
Chapter Two: The Separation.
Before the beginning of this still pursuing family, before the the multiple split in the wolves, back when the lands were ruled by one large family, mixed with what are now ancestors of Maledetto. With such ease did they exist. No whispers of doubt, no evidence of foul play. Some might say it was too good to be true, and others would say they were right.
The world was cloaked in darkness, the rains fell, shrouding the pale moon like smoke to the air. It was dark, cold, bitter. Such paradise would cease to exist for much longer. Some say the Moon was angry, hiding itself from view, as if it opposed the very family itself. What had gone on underneath the eye's of the Don's? What was being played out right underneath their maws? Fear filled the once peaceful pack, sparking dangerous accusations, and the reveal of hideous crimes. Conflict grew thick, mournful cries were carried by the wind. The family, was falling apart. And it continued to do so, not a soul had the power to keep them together, when it seemed every force around them wanted nothing more than to see them part. Year after year the family grew smaller, so much spite, too much doubt. Many believe the rains would stop, once whatever was done was reconciled. That hope seems all but lost as the ways continued through the years, becoming more frequent, more violent.
Chapter Three: Present Day.
To be added...
