Does having the word 'open' in brackets at the end of the subject mean that the thread is 'open' to everyone who might want to join you? Is it necessary to have this?

It is not necessary, but it does make it a lot easier for potential rp partners to join your thread.
Personally, I find it easier, I don't know about anyone else.

They arent needed. But its easier to put open as oppossed to just the title, because then you'll get five threads of "can I join this?" when obviously they can.
