------------------------------------------------------Night Thing------------------------------------------------------
Pale moonlight illuminated the gravel path as the boy pounded down the hill. His breath came out in jagged rasps as he fled, eyes darting around in a frenzy of panic as the night closed in around him. Unable to see most of the path in front of him he was unable to avoid the large rock in the road. His face made contact with the ground as his body crashed down the hill like a tattered doll. Finally coming to a stop the young man rose to his knees with shaky hands. Silence bloomed onto the forest around him as a figure appeared at the top of the hill. The boy’s breathing quickened as his heart thumped in his chest, surely it could hear from where it stood, smell the very fear on his being. Clouds shifted, releasing light onto the gravel path and revealing the figure on the hill. The boy felt his blood run cold as he took in the full sight of his pursuer. Red, watery eyes gleamed against the night as the beast watched its prey move about below it, pale leathery skin stretched tight against the frame giving off a white hue; large sharp teeth tore across the creature’s face its mouth stretching from ear to ear in a grotesque imitation of a smile. With long fluid movements it scuttled forward all six legs positioned at awkward almost spiderlike angles. Seeing its sudden approach, the boy scrambled back in a panic; managing to get to his feet he began to run once more. Long, spindly legs soon overtook him and before he realized what had happened he was running to the creature instead of away from it. He stopped, dismayed as the beast grinned at him with its monstrous smile, its long tongue lolling from its mouth brushing the ground though the beast’s head was easily four feet high. Frozen with fear the boy watched as it inched towards him, then without warning swiped at him with one of its clawed hands knocking him off his feet with a startled yell. Pain erupted in his side as his ribs gave out a loud crack. He opened his eyes to find the creature looming over him its foul breath blasting into his face. Tears streamed down his cheek whether it was from the stench, fear, or both he couldn’t tell.
“What do you want from me?” the boy asked in a shaky whisper. The creature’s cold eyes blinked slowly and its body began to shake while it let out a wheezy growl. It took the boy a moment to realize that the beast was laughing at him. Even more afraid than before he tried to inch away only to be stopped by a clawed hand. “What do you want from me?” the creature said with a smile in the boy’s own voice.
“St-stop that!” the boy yelled, stuck between anguish and rage.
“What do you want?” the beast repeated once more in the boy’s voice, its slimy tongue darting out and wrapping tightly around the boy’s neck.
“Can’t you guess?” It mocked as it lifted him off the ground, “Can you tell me?” Its eyes glinted hungrily as it watched him struggle.
“What’s wrong? Don’t you want to know?” It added as the boy kicked and fought in its grasp. “Don’t you want to know the answer?” It taunted again as the boy was lowered to its mouth. “Or does it matter now?”
