A haunting cry echoed through the ruins. A cold sound full of death, yet ringing with life. Surely a strange sound to any being that might hear. Heavy footfalls were muffled by soft dirt one moment, only to clatter against stone the next as the nightmare creature bolted through the ruins singing its song of terror. The deep solemn cry rang out again, this time the howl sliding to a higher pitch in slow crescendo and tapering back down to a throaty growl. The monster was back. The one that had mysteriously disappeared so long ago. Had they forgotten about it? They shouldn't have... Well, this was their wake up call.
The beast's armor clad body reflected the stars and moonlight, mirror plates serving to make it nearly invisible, save for the green flames of its eyes leaving trails in the dim light as it ran, rejoicing in its return to the lovely ruins. Little did it know that things had changed. Little did it care. The ruins were its birth place, and it would come to reminisce in those bloody memories, relive those torturous times when it still had emotions. When she killed him. When that other female ran off after he had endured the rituals of Undeath for her, the one he loved. Those rituals had been held in the very ruins the creature ran through.
Still screaming his song to the stars, Meridian ran, his antlered head held high, chest puffed out in pride, knowing that he had survived a literal trip to hell and back. The portal behind him was long gone, yet he ran. Not in fear, but in joy of being back on solid ground. Not being surrounded by nightmarish monstrosities that could easily wipe him from existence with a single blow and not having to worry about the rock beneath his steel claws suddenly turning to magma and swallowing him up. There was grass, there were trees, and the sky! The sky was beautiful! Another howl went up, sending chills through the spine of any creature that may have heard.
The Hell had changed him. It was nothing like the normal underworld at all. Hot, violent, unpredictable in all sorts of bizarre manners. Frightening in ways that would make the sub-surface look like a grassy spring meadow. He was a ruthless, emotionless beast. All emotions tucked far back into his mind and covered with their own steel shell. He could not speak. No, not yet. It would surely come back to him, as well as his old self. In due time, yes. All in time... But none of those things mattered to the steel clad monster.
Meridian was back.
