Mist swirled about, condensing into strange patterns, flowing and twisting into enigmatic patterns, a pearly gray expanse that was thin enough for Skirus to see through for about three feet. She shivered as she felt the snow beneath her paws, hating this cold weather. But it was necessary... oh so necessary...
Her amber gaze darted sharply to the left as a shadow flitted beside her, just beyond her range of vision. A blanket of silence pressed upon her white-tipped auds, oppressive and thick. Her sharp claws clicked on a stone, telling her that she had found what she was looking for. Peering through the dimness, she could just make out the diamond-shaped rock, carved with strange designs of swirls and vortexes, all spinning towards the center, where two words were carved:
DARK WING
Her breath caught in her chest, and a scream tore through the quietness, echoing, unfolding, gaining in strength and pitch until it was so shrill the earth seemed to crack. To Skirus, it almost did- for with a snap, the stone beneath her paws broke in two, splitting the words horizontally as a shadow parted the mist and flew at her head. Quickly, she stumbled backwards, avoiding the night-black claws of the animal, getting her first good glimpse of it since she had entered the fog.
It was about the size of an eagle, with wings like a dragon's, though it's body was more bird-like than reptilian. It's feathers carried the putrid scent of carrion and old blood, nearly making Skirus retch in disgust. Shrieking, the thing turned and attacked again, but this time she was ready. Leaping, the gray wolfess knocked the bird-thing out of the air, making it squawk in anger. It jabbed at her with it's spear-like beak, creating a gash in her shoulder. Blood spilled onto the white snow, dying it crimson. Fury rose in her chest.
"You! You took it, you cursed demon! Give it back!"
