The full harvest moon was high overhead, smudged with thin black clouds like charcoal on a fresh, crisp piece of white paper. Rosy gray paws sunk into the wet sand where the ocean met the land. Shoop, lift. Shoop, lift. Shoop, lift. Blue eyes peered out over the inky black, yet calm, sea.
"I wish I could travel there," Kanojo mumbled aloud. "Great lands would await me... The forest sprites would greet me on their white sandy banks and crown me as their queen... I would take a king..." She wandered off, spinning a fantastic tale of what would happen if she traveled across a sea so calm at times, yet choppy at others.
As her tale came to a close she found an oyster lying at her paws. She took it to a rock lying in the sand, but it did not break. Oh, how she wished she had thumbs! She then had an idea.
In the dark of night, the only ligfht being the moon and the stars, she felt around for a crack with her right paw. She then, keeping her paw on the spot, dropped a rock on the top of the shell.
It must have been either brittle, old, or both, for it shattered instantly. It the spot where it had been lying as a whole, there lay a glossy white pearl. It gleamed in the moonlight and seemed as if it wanted to dance with the waves. Kanojo sat there, pearl at her feet. "How can I safe-keep this?" she wondered aloud.
Feet in the sand stopped her thoughts short.
She stood, hair bristled and tail up. Kanojo bared her fangs and spat, "Who goes there?"

Standing on the sandy shore, a plain, homely wolf was studying his reflection in the moonlit waters. It had long since he had wanted to destroy himself because of appearance, obsessing over his lack of attractiveness, but it was still sobering to see his patchy, mud-brown-with-forest-green fur and his eyes the color of wet bark. This uncomely appearance was what had caused him, as an insecure pup, to withdraw from others’ company, and consequently, even though he cared less about what others thought about how he looked, he still lacked social skills.
Also, his ability was a secret he did not like others to know. It gave him the excuse to lurk and watch, but never come out and live. He was truly an offspring of shadows, not malevolent, but an observer and listener. It was a lonely life, but he had gotten used to the loneliness.
Shade sighed and looked up from his unflattering reflection, staring down the beach. He saw that he was not alone, and instinctively he shifted into his phantom-form, which was extremely easy to do in the darkness of night. No one could see him or hear him; in his phantom-form, he was just as a ghost.
Taking back the role of the observer and listener, Shade curiously approached the other figure. He soon saw it was a young she-wolf wrestling with what appeared to be an oyster-shell. Bemused, then amused, Shade watched as she solved her dilemma, cracking open the shell to reveal a beautiful pearl. It was perhaps one of the most beautiful things Shade had ever seen, shimmering in the moonlight, and Shade was so intent on studying its loveliness that he let go of his phantom-form for just a moment and stepped forward.
It was enough. The she-wolf heard him, and was instantly on her guard. The moment Shade realized he had been heard, he shifted back into phantom-form instantly. He cursed himself for being even briefly forgetful. He stepped back, for she had responded in quite a fiery way. He was not exactly afraid of her—he was older than she was, judging by appearances (a loathsome thing to do)—and well able to defend himself, but he felt ashamed for intruding on her privacy.
Yet at the same time, he was intrigued. A part of him urged him to be bold and confront her, for he could always vanish from her life forever if need be. Shade hesitated; then he strode out from a nearby brush just as he shed his phantom-form, and was his usual unattractive self. “Uh—excuse me, I, uh, didn’t…well, I didn’t mean to startle you. It’s just, well, um, your pearl, it is so beautiful. It caught my attention.” Shade did not have the best dialogue skills, or social skills in general, for he had not the usual experience of his age.

Kanojo's hair on on spine laid down, and her tail lowered just a tad bit. The bristly muscle attached to her rump wagged slighty. "This pearl," she said, "must be very rare. In fact, it is the only pearl I have ever seen on a beach. I've seen necklaces and bracelets; trinkets and treasures... oh, I must be off subject." She dug her claws into the sandy shoreline. It soothed her, and she softened. Her lip fell back to its usual place.
"The sea looks almost like the ink of a squid," she said aloud. She faced the other wolf and stared into his brown eyes. "I'm Kanojo," she greeted. "It is a pleasure to be your acquaintance."
Her lips formed a crooked grin as she sat her rump in the sand. Nobody she ever met was this... shy. She would try to break this canine's timid nature. He would be so much happier that way.

ooc. hope ya don't mind me posting. =3 and if you do... uh... o.o;;
The salty cascades of foam flex up in ever which direction as the clumsy cub galloped down the thin, silver strip of beach. The world was submerged in a monochrome atmosphere, brought by the coming of every night. The salt stung slightly against his skin, water lapping up at his stomach as he bounded further out into the rolling ocean. As it withdrew itself it left his fur in slightly matted, plagued by millions of single grains of sand. He could care less about such details and, not surprisingly, failed to even notice. He set his warm amber eyes out onto the dark, foreboding ocean. In its way, it was sort of creepy. It was just so big, there was so much of it. If it sucked you in you’d just disappear into the darkness, forgotten and untouched. Keda shivered slightly as the chilled wind ruffled through his short, dense coat. He withdrew his gaze, attention never held on one thing for too long a time.
Revai watched his son from where he stood, some fifteen meters behind, pace a slow, seemingly disgruntled trot. His heavy head hung low before his shoulders, clear silver gaze simply watching the young cub clumsily saunter about before him. He couldn’t believe he was stuck with that pathetic little creature, always at his side, cramping his style. At least here he had enough to entertain him, so he wasn’t constantly yapping away at him. Revai hated kids. They were gods sick joke, the punishment for the pleasure. Usually he had plenty enough time to leave before the kid came along, why had he been so stupid this time? The dark-pelted male released a cold, tiresome sigh. The moonlight danced playfully over his charcoal pelt, muscles rolling effortlessly beneath it as he placed each paw forward. It wasn’t often that Revai felt regret, but this time it seemed karma had really caught up with him, and he’d never wished so bad that he could turn back the clocks. He then noticed that the little runt had stopped and was thundering back towards him. [grrr]. he grumbled under his breath, glaring at the small cream and orange ball of fur. What you want now, flea bag? he spoke, as Keda approached him.
Keda leapt towards his grumpy father, a bright smile plastered on his round features. He ignored Revai’s irate tones, Where we now, Dad? He spoke, sliding back to walk beside him. He noted as Revai released a low growl, I’m not your [grrr]ing Dad! How many times I gotta tell you that? Jesus… Keda was used to being spoken to us such, and such angry tones and harsh language just seemed to bounce straight off him. He was about to retaliate, when Revai spoke again, And I don’t know where we are. Keda did not actually know that Revai was his father, he only called him such because he was, basically, the closest thing he’d ever had to a Dad, and he was the kind to apply such names quite freely. He wanted parents more than anything, so nit was almost like a subconscious act. When he got older he would realize the truth, and in time it became obvious to those who met them, as well, that they were blood.
Revai looked down once more at the small being trotting along beside him. Though he didn’t realize it, and would never admit it, he did have some care for his kid. Maybe it was just that Keda was a little slice of himself, and for that he couldn’t help but love him. However, he’d never let anybody know this, especially not Keda. Maybe when they found another pack he could ditch him with some clucky, maternal female. It was then that he noticed something, a scent on the cold wind: there were others near by. He sent his piercing, silver gaze in search of these strangers, catching sight of their silluettes some 20 meters up the beach. He paused briefly and watched as his son shot off in pursuit of their newfound company.
Keda raced towards the two, moist pink tongue lolly from parted jaws, a wide grin on his face. He loved meeting new wolves and making friends. As he neared them, he released a loud bark, Heya! His tones were bright and friendly. His pace slowed and he padded towards them, abnormally bushy tail hung over his back. He noted the glistening pearl placed on the sand before them and, without hesitation, padded straight up to it. Wow, lady, neat rock you got there! He said, stopping and staring down at beautiful thing. He then looked up at his present company once more, I’m Keda, pleasure ta meet the both of ya. He said with a smile, My Da- I mean, uh, my friend Revai’ll be here in moment. He’s just really slow.

To Shade’s relief, the she-wolf relaxed when he showed himself. When she replied, Shade found himself fascinated by her eloquence and the indication of her experience. If she had seen such riches, what was she doing here, talking to him? Most wolves he knew would have politely walked off by now, put off by his homeliness and lack of conversational skills.
“It’s really beautiful,” Shade said again, for lack of anything better to say. “And yeah, um, the ocean, it’s…really impressive. I love it here. It’s a great place to stand and look out, and it’s pretty fun to swim in the summer and stuff. Oh, um, I’m Shade. It’s, well, it’s nice to meet you…Kanojo.” He managed a smile, though he could not help but feel self-conscious.
Luckily, he was spared from having to endure another awkward silence when the young pup came barrelling over to them. Shade smiled down at Keda; he had always liked pups. He had sometimes helped his sister Novawing look after her twin pups, and enjoyed them immensely. He also felt less awkward about talking to younger wolves; generally, they did not judge him as adults did. “Hey there, Keda. My name’s Shade.” He grinned. “I’m sure your friend isn’t slow, he just likes to take his time to smell the roses…or, well, in this case, the salty ocean smell.” As if to demonstrate, Shade breathed in deeply, reveling in that familiar sea aroma.

Kanojo looked over to the small pup and spread a crooked grin on her lips. She couldn't resist pups, no, she couldn't. "Your friend isn't slow," she said plainly. "You're just too fast for him to keep up with you." Her tail swished away some of the tawny grains on the shoreline. A small crab snapped at the end of her tail, and she winced.
The wolf closed her eyes and inhaled the salty oxygen. Ah, yes. It was refreshing. Her claws kneaded the sand, and she found a small, caved in spot. It was a turtle egg nest. Without hesitating, she asked, "Anyone here fond of sea turtle eggs?"

oOc| Amy, you there? x3 I hope I don't come across as impatient, but I don't want to let this thread die D: So, whenever you can, feel free to jump right in, but until then, I'mma reply ahead of my turn, okay? ^_^Shade gave a slow smile and nodded at Kanojo’s words. At the very least, she appeared as fond of pups as he was. Maybe that would help him better connect with her, so he didn’t come off as a complete stuttering idiot.
The same crab that had pinched Kanojo’s tail now scuttled over across Shade’s paws, nipping at them as it went along. But Shade was imperturbed, watching it walk its bizarre sideways walk. As a watcher, he mostly left the wildlife alone, preferring to observe their antics, which were so different from his own. So when Kanojo dug up the sea turtle eggs, Shade winced.
“I’ve never, well, I’ve never really tried them,” he began, and the moment he was aware that he was talking to a fellow adult wolf, he fell back into his nervous stammer, “because, I mean, I usually like to just leave them alone. Those poor little turtle babies have a hard time of anyway, when they—you know, I’ve sometimes sat and watched them—I do that a lot, and, and, well, most of them never make it to the ocean because of the gulls. The gulls just swoop down and eat the poor little babies, and they don’t have a chance, so I think, whether the eggs taste good or not, I think we should leave them. Sorry,” he added bashfully, aware of how foolish he looked and how silly he must have appeared to Kanojo. He was showing a soft side for creatures no one cared about, and that was odd. But he couldn’t help it. Compassion for others was something his entire family shared, whether he liked it or not.
Wanting to turn the attention away from the eggs and his embarrassing outburst for them, he turned back to Keda. “Ever searched for sea shells on the beach? There’re some really pretty ones around here.”

Kanojo looked down at the eggs she had dug up. She had never given much thought about them. And... birds actually ate them? Disgusted with herself, she set the eggs back where it came from and covered the hole reluctantly. Turning back to the others, she said, "No matter, Shade. I had never given so much thought into them."
The wolf's ears swiveled to the side as she heard the gulls above calling. Perhaps they're going to eat those eggs, she said to herself. Kanojo shuddered at the thought of it - they could one day have their own minds and their own life! Shade brushed away the rest of her thoughts. He had changed the subject. Seashells.
"Yes, seashells," she said. "I once found a conch shell. I took it everywhere, and my mother said I could hear the ocean through it. I always held it to my ear, and... well, that's the reason why I like the beach so much. Seashells. I come here sometimes to hunt for them. And," she paused here, gesturing to her pearl and the fragments of oyster that surrounded it, "I've been luckier than most today." The wolf's lips curled into a small grin.

Despite Kanojo’s gracious response, Shade couldn’t help but feel awkward. Most wolves he knew didn’t like to be lectured to. The few he had had the chance to meet in his lifetime usually brushed away his compassionate observations as “moral superiority,” as though Shade were trying to guilt-trip them into doing something he felt was right. But that really was never his intention at all.
Nevertheless, he was glad that Kanojo had turned her attention away from the eggs and had accepted his change of subject to seashells. “Yes, I also remember, I mean, well, I’ve also heard the ocean in a conch shell, and it was really quite interesting, not to say marvelous…” he trailed off, the gleam of moonlight off of nearby shells catching his eye. He wandered across the shore, not far from where the others stood, and before long he had found an actual conch shell. It was a spiral of pink and white and peach, and mostly intact, which was rare for a seashell battered by waves and against rocks. Pleased and triumphant, he brought it back, and gave it to Keda. “Have a listen,” he urged.
That done, Shade returned his attention to Kanojo and her pearl. He was truly fascinated by it, and by Kanojo’s good fortune in finding it. “It’s gorgeous,” he said softly. “Like it holds its own moonlight.” He was so entranced by it that he forgot to be self-conscious and awkward. He then looked up and met Kanojo’s gaze. “You should keep it forever. No treasure’s worth this.”
