Ranin Dark. It was so dark. So dark. The sky was a dreary gray of painted clouds, and the strong smell of the saltwater hung heavily in the air. No bird song to cheer the mood, no sound at all but the eery, distant calls of wolves and the breaking of the waves on the rocks far below. So far far away. It must have been late evening, as the darkness loomed high and low around all things, and most things appeared only as silhouettes. Black shadows leaning over, holding their breathe, waiting to see what would happen. It was a strange animal that walked the forest. He was cold, unfeeling. His build was horribly skinny, his eyes a toxic looking blue, no hint of care or life. Dead eyes. Cold eyes. His ragged, large ears swiveled atop a canine head. Was this creature Canine? His fur was matted, his tail and head held low. Tail? Tails. Six tails. Six, once fluffy tails. Now matted and scroungy. No, not Canine, Vulpine. He was a fox, a kitsune. But, Myobu or Nogitsune was unknown. His fur was a reddish colour, except for the stereotypically white underside. But, it held no shean nor fluff. It was completely matted down as if it were covered in mud. The multi-tailed vulpine staggered toward the edge of the cliff. The cliff with the rocks so far below. The waves breaking and spraying saltwater into the air. The drop would be enough to kill most normal creatures. He wondered darkly if it could kill a kitsune. He edged closer, intent on something. Peering down, he smiled. it might just be enough. Just barely. He redied himself to jump over, to end it, but stopped suddenly, the pentagram and cresent moon carved in his forepaws glowing red. No. He could not give his soul to the sea. He could not. He would not die alone, without a name. He would not, could not. He looked down one last time, then looked back up. Far, far away, there was a break in the clouds. The beam of light shining through intently gave him hope. Gave him courage to live. It gave him motivation. He moved back away, smiling to himself. Stay alive, said a soft voice in his head. Stay alive and never forget me. Ranin, don't forget. Don't die"I won't die, My beloved. I won't. I won't die alone, without a name. No, I can't." he responded aloud. His pledge. The pledge that so many before him had made. And so many after, either with good intent or bad. He would not die without a name, lost in the seas of time. He smiled warmly, and life flickered back into his eyes as he lowered his hind and raised his head into a sitting position. He turned to face the sea, and stared at the beam of light. The ocean below was sparkling. Sparkling like diamonds sown across a green-blue-black tapestry. Oh, if only he had someone to share this with.

A fox, by appearance, was trotting aimlessly about in the forest. He was a bright red, with a black-tipped tail. He lifted his nose towards the sky, inhaling deeply. He suddenly burst towards a nearby bush, and, as if on cue, a grey rabbit darted from the hole. He pounced on it after three quick strides, breaking its neck instantly. He picked up the rabbit, pleased with himself, and was about to feast when he sensed someone's feelings--Suicidal. This was not his sister, but another being, another kitsune. He raced towards the feeling, still carrying the rabbit, and skidded to a stop at the edge of the forest.
He stared at the bedraggle kitsune before him, who was looking over the cliff. He heard his uttered words, and saw him look to the sky. He sensed the newfound happiness of the kitsune as relief washed over his body. Sighing, he walked beside the kitsune, set the rabbit next to him, and spoke:
"You look rather hungry... Would you care for some dinner?" he was smiling, but as he waited for a response, he directed a few thoughts towards his sister. 'I know you felt that... I was afraid he was going to jump.'
Kit was walking along, a live rabbit clutched under her paws. She felt the fear of the pathetic creature, and dug her claws into it, causing small pinpricks of red to jump out against the startling white. It squirmed more fiercely, and she prepared to do something she had done many times before--take out her pain on the worthless creature. She clamped her muzzle over its foreleg, and was about to clamp down, but her brother though-spoke to her.
'Probably would have, if you hadn't arrived.' 'But the thing is, he became happy all on his own... I didn't help at all... He's starved to death.' 'So let him starve. I don't want to get involved with this.' 'It's another Kitsune.' She paused, still holding the rabbit's leg between her jaws. She clamped them shut and twisted them, breaking the rabbit's leg and tearing it off. 'Come here. NOW.' She sighed. He could be so annoying. She raked her teeth at the rabbit's stomach, then headed for her brother, leaving the pathetic creature where it was. She watched from the trees, which satisfied her brother for the moment, studying the other to be sure that he did not attack.

Ranin gazed into the sudden light, spirits lifting to no avail. The light and sun always cheered him, they always told him that it was alright... That it was all right... He knew, because the daily he left the mountains, his friends, his group dead throughout various places in the mountains, the sun hadn't shined. The sky lamented with icey tetars that burned the nose and blinded the eyes. The sun stayed behind the heavy clouds, not wanting to witness the sorrow. So long ago that was, that Ranin curled up besides his life long companion and said goodbye... Goodbye forever.. So long it was... But, quite recently, something had happened. He came upon the ruins of an old building.... But, then, everything went into a downwards spiral. He suddenly caught nightmares whenever he slept away from the den he made in the ruins. Nightmares, that creatures were pulling him down into the Abyss. Down, down, blackness consuming him, and then out of the eternal blackness stepped his friends. But, they were not as they had been. They looked like they had been rotting. Rotting, rotting. Flesh decayed and fur falling out. But, not only that; they were mummified from the dry, harsh mountain winds. Thay were barely recognisable. It scared him, and they advanced in on him chanting something in a foreign, grizzly language that chilled him to the bone and made everything icey. He thought about it so much. He began forgetting to hunt, forgetting to eat. He inwardly tortured himself every minute of every day. Once, he evenb bit himself, but that wouldn't help. He grew increasingly suicidal, welcoming death in almost any form. Except for the water, except for the cold. There were creatures down, down deep in the water that came up when something fell in, and grabbed away their souls to make it become one of them.... It was horrible, like damnation. And, in the cold, there were creatures. Tall creatures that stood on their back legs like people, but they came when something was dying, sometimes to lament it, or sometimes to strip off little peices of flesh as it slowly died... That's not how he wanted to go. Not at all. No.
He, at first, did not acknowledge the other of his kind near him. He felt him before he came, but as he came closer, his spirits almost sank. Somehow, he almost hoped that his friend would come. But, he continued staring out to sea at the light. No, he though. Why are they dead, why did they leave me?! What did I do to diserve this! When the other vulpine offered him some food, he pried his eyes from his friend and rested them on the other. He felt alienated immediately. The other was more healthier than him, overall. He was also better oriented, and was sane. Very little guilt, very little that he let on.
"No thank you, I'm full. Perhaps you'd tell me your name? I've naught an aquantance in forever."

Kade watched the creature with increased sadness, shaking his head when he denied the food. "My name is Kade." He tried to use some of his psychic power to lift his mood. "You don't look full. Are you sure you don't want it? I can always catch another..."
Kit was still watching, growling impatiently.
Just stay in the woods for a while... Her brother pleaded her. Of course, now that you mention it, I will approach. I wasn't going to, but... She laughed, and her brother groaned.
She walked along the edge of the woods until she appeared behind the two. She crouched low to the ground, then launched herself forward, speeding up to meet them. Rather than stoping, she leapt over the two, her claws brushing the fur on the top of Kade's head. She laughed as she fell, plunging into the water below...
Kade sighed, apologizing for his sister's rudeness. "Too bad she can get back up..." He muttered.

Ranin shook his heaad once again, denying the food... He would not eat until he absolutely needed to. He began to detest himself eating after a bit, and ever since he hardly took a bite of anything. His ears perked a bit when the other... kitsune... told him his name. Kade. Quite plain, he thought. What was it like to have a plain name? He forgot long ago. He turned his head back out to see, and thought of something to say in responce. His name... Ranin... Could he use that name? Was it safe? Yes, it was. He opened his mouth as if to speak, then closed it again and licked his lips. The salt in the air dried them out... He opened his mouth again, then let it hang open for a moment. He said slowly, quietly, "Ranin......" Then, he caught sight of something moving in the woodline.. It was faint, only barely a silhouette. It scared him, and he began to panic. He tensed uup, and slowly ifted himself up and backed away, muttering the word no... No, why? "they're coming for me..." He was scared out of his skin, his eyes were wide. Backing up, some of the rock gaveway underfoot. He jumped, and almost started running away, but he saw, when the female kitsune came out of the woodline, that it was just that, not one of the party that diied a long time ago... Ranin sighed, but he was still shocked, and when the kitsune jumped over the other into the water, he yipped and jumped. After a moment, though, he looked over the edge, hearing the other's words. "So jumping wouldn't have worked anyway..." he said quietly, thoughtfully..

..::Twisted::..
Those hellish green peepers seemed to roll with delicate hunger, a detestful snarling hunger that burned deep in his guts. With loathful eyes, emerald as the gem which harbored the name, semi- transluscient, he watched three forms off in the distance, gathered as though a family of some sort. But Twisted sensed that it was not the case, the imaciated one was not of the other's blood. He got this just by a wiff of the sweet ocean-side air. Four tails, four lovely silverine tails flicked out like bushy whips out behind his lean, sly form. Underneath those killer's eyes, a dainty muzzle sprung forth, long and tapering, three crimson chevrons alligned downt he silver bridge of his muzzle. And those eyes trailed to the meat, a rabbit, the noble kitsune's stomache gave an irritable snarl of disapproval. He needed something to eat. Oh well, something he could fix.
From the point of a spectator, watching this shadowed silver being emerge from the shadows of the forest would be like seeing an angel from heaven decending. Twisted had arrived. The kitsune's toned shoulders moved with a tight, and yet smooth ripple as the muscles on his chest worked, pulling and straining. Dainty forepaws, inked black were the first to foot in his advance, well, less of an advance and more of a casual saunter. As the strange silver being made his way forward, making his presence undoubtably known to the three, perhaps even the femme whom had thrown herself from the cliff. Even if you did not see him, one would sense the dark repressing aura of dank misery and pungent hate that floated as almost a visible entity about his noble shoulders. Twisted kept his head high, muzzle snared back in that captivating smile that he wore when just about to preform some dirty work. 'Don't look too deep into it my freinds..Thou might lose thyself.'
Twisted stopped a good few bounds from them, eyes the imaciated kitsune once more with distaste and his dome floated with ease towards Kade. The silver kitsune hailed to them, his voice tight and friendly, but held that rumble of menace all the same. That was one thing Twisted could never get rid of. It sounded as though he was always on the verge of tearful laughter. Insanity and hilarity, what a mix. But this fox was far from insane. Sadistic yes, insane no. Insane creatures ran about with their mouths slavering, talking babbled nonsene. That was not Twisted, no Twisted saw himself as quite refined really. "Afternoon, chaps," those emerald souls smiled with him as he spoke, his voice rolling on the winds. "Mighty nice day is it not?"
'Nice day to [grrr]ing die...' And for an instant, those smiling eyes narrowed.

Kade looked at the weakened kitsune as it spoke. So he had been suicidal. He sensed the kitsune’s fear when Kit leapt over the two of them, and he sighed, trying to calm him. He suddenly sensed different feelings. Hunger, and a darkness that he didn’t feel because of his psychic powers. Hunger, and a darkness beyond normality, which he sensed not with his psychic powers, but the same way all others did. A low growl rumbled deep in his throat, though it was so low it could barely be heard, and his fur stood on end slightly. 'There is an unwanted visitor here.’
Kit heard the low, urgent message just before she hit the water, closing her eyes as cool comfort slid over her body. She fought the though-speech out of her mind, but it persisted, becoming more urgent with each repeating.
‘There is an unwanted visitor here, and it is not looking to be friendly. Get up here... NOW.’
She sighed at the last one, and replied,
‘Fine, calm down. Sheesh. I’m coming, and I’ll kick the dude’s ass.’ ‘Don’t be so sure. He’s more than your normal kitsune.’ ‘Kitsune? Well, I’d expect it to be more, then.’ ‘Kit...’ he sent this as a warning. ‘Fine, I’ll be careful. Not like I care what happens to me anyway. This gives me a chance to fight, so I’m taking it.’
She surfaced, inhaling deeply through her nostrils, and paddled over to the edge of the cliff, turning into a bare teenage human girl as she started to climb the wall with ease. She had long, dark red hair that hung down to her waist. She reached the top with ease, holding herself there, waiting to see what would happen...
Kade slitted his eyes at the newcomer. “Hello. May I ask why you’re here?” His head was bowed slightly, not in a kind way, and his voice was low and filled with warning.

Ranin peered deeply into the churning waves and crashing mists, the salt drying his lips and nose. He peered down unblinkingly, lost in his own thoughts, his own memories. Into the gray sea that holds so much, going on and on and on to touch lands where never has any kitsune or wolf been. To touch the other side of the world, and he realized, that this whole piece of land, even though it stretched on further than he could see, was nothing but a huge island in a vast, unforgiving ocean... How could anything exist in there?? Anything whatsoever? It seemed impossible, but, the legends have never been wrong before.... He felt another presence nearby. A cold, unforgiving one, like the ocean itself. Killing and taking souls... Although, it was in the form of...... Of..... A kitsune? Goddamnit!! Where were all these fox-spirits coming from? They seemed like they were popping in to get a piece of meat for free. Strange... All these scavengers... And no kills whatsoever. Not even the faint smell of it... That was strange. Ranin turned around slowly, moistening his lips and nose with his tongue. He stared quietly for a moment at the silver fox of four tails... Ranin possessed six... But nogitsune listened not to the rules. Nogitsune? Was Ranin now a Nogitsune? Was he that, himself? He listened quietly of the words of the other, and spoke slowly, at almost a whisper; "Good day to you... Chap... Come, mourn with us, the loss of life. It does no harm to mourn for a stranger." Ranin stared into the grin... Scary, it was... But his attention was taken by a human girl, bare, stepping out of the water. He jumped back, and backed away, mouth open and eyes wide. A human? Why was it here? He stopped, and lowered himself to the ground, yiping, "Don't hurt me!!"

Emerald sphere's seemed to crackle like wildfire beneath his brows. Chevrons pon his muzzle wrinkled as his pulled those black lips into a snarling smile of sorts, contorting his face into something wholey unpleasant. The blunt critisism in the male fox's voice left him entirely unfazed, not a waver on his sleek and handsome silverine form. There was suspicion, Twisted smelt it upon the male's form. Then another presencem femme, and undoubtably that of the female fox whom had careened near carelesly off the face of the cliff. So she had some sort of power too, as did her brotherly counterpart. Transformation, how useful, and what was this? Did Twisted sene a slight bit of telepathy going on between the siblings. How ripe. Disdainful eyes set upon the imaciated kitsune, six tails poking from its rump, rivalling his own four. Twisted ignored the male and the transformed femme, and their telepathic mumbo-jumbo for the time being.
This fellow was strange and dim on the inside, Twisted felt it. Like the lantern that was his life was simply ready to flicker out and die in harsh winds. His words held no life to them, and it pleased some perverse inner part of Twisted to hear them, for he knew he had found a lost soul. You see, Twisted would have been considered of the Reiko, a Kiko or Koryo, a haunting fox, spirit of death and detirmination. Twisted took lives, that was waht he did, be it be for pleasure, or some nessecery circumstance, it was what he enjoyed with almost a passion, a regardless and reckless passion for blood. Life, death, darkness, lawless. Killer in thy midsts my friends, beware his eyes, beware his mind. He chuckled lightly and reached out, touching this dark creature's feeble mind with his own, it was a simple task, this sextuple-tailed kitsune was so ungaurded.
"I am here because I wish to be, Kade. Here because this is where I am ment to be." These words were directed with a certain, taught tendancy to them. Then he projected. 'Yes I can read minds, friend. I can do a whole lot more then that though.' And he smiled at Kade, a very wolfish smile, no pun intended. Something greedy and semi-insane. Eyes sought the fearful sextupled nogitsune. Watched him fall in fear of the human who was not really human. A mixture of pity and disgust crossed his royal face. "She is kitsune, fool. You can smell it on her. Rise and do not cower, no kitsune should cower. Do you know no pride, Ranin?" Eyes became hard and unforgiving. Now was not the time to kill just yet. He would wait to see what these feeble creatures would do against him. He would not go unprevoked.

Kade did not even try to conceale his snarl as he stood, facing the newcomer. So he could read minds... How troublesome. He tried to calm the cowering kitsune, saying, "It is only my sister, do not worry, she will not harm you. I am not so sure about the other that has joined us, though...."
Kit's eyes slitted as the newcoming kitsune spoke. She was sick of this. She flung herself over the edge of the cliff, soaring over Kade and Ranin as she transformed in mid-air. She landed a few feet ahead of them, a fox once more. Her hair was raised, and a terrible growl rumbled from the deep of her throat. She arched her back, and started to circle to the side of him.
"Get out," she snarled. Then, as a thought directed towards him, said, 'I will not refrain from fighting, unlike my brother. I will either kill you, leave you injured and shamed, or die myself."

Ranin looked around panicingly, caught in a fight... No, not now. Not now, when he was weak and starved, and his only aid would be his magics. His magics, only illusion... Only illusion and wind... What would that do? He stood up slowly, head down and ears back. He stood, not advancing nor shying away. Though, a bit of courage showed through. He looked the silver straight in the eye, and said without a quiver in his voice, "Pride has long ago left this skittish trickster you now see before you." He kept eye contact, and looked no other way, sensing the anger and offense in his actions and voice. He didn't raise his head, nor move near the others. He looked at both, and said slowly, "I owe not my alliegence to either of you. I will not join the quarrel until I am forced to." He smirked a bit, and raised his head and leaned back on his haunches. His tailed swayed behind him in an intertained fashion, and his large ears stood perked. He looked again from the siblings to the other, and slowly the clouds gathered overhead. They were wine red, and heavy. The colour seemed to fade away, only leaving red. Oh, perfect, now if they could see his illusions, that would be the treat. They were powerful illusions, and often brought dreary disorientation. This was the perfect setting for someone to die in. If only it would rain... If only.... If only... He looked up to the sky, and spoke in a gruff whisper, "I allie myself to whoever lives."

Ahah, this truely was an amusing sight to behold. The femme raised herself to fighting height, a stature that Twisted could truely respect. Well, respect as in whatever his kiltered mind saw as some form of respect. Pretty hard to tell. Emerald eyes watched as the clouds rolled in over head, colored in rich crimson and ripe with a pulsing aura of dark magic. Some pretty fancy effects and Twisted read it strait off Ranin's mind as if it were an open book. Shoulders haunched downwards, as he felt the anger in Kit's voice, and the strong desperarity in Kade's. It almost made him want to laugh, laugh hard and let the tears roll down his cheeks like sickly crystals. No not now though. Maybe later, laugh tears over the corpse of this bothersome femme as her brother watches in horror. Yes, that would be nice. And suddenly, Twisted wondered just what Kit's blood might taste like. What it would feel like all over his body. He shivered and felt his sheath thicken with a tingle. The whole situation was getting him mighty frisky.
He swirled his head in a strange manner towards Ranin for a moment and projected. 'If you want rain, so be it. And if you allie yourself to the one who lives....then....I shall be seeing you soon my friend.' And with that his head was thrown to the sky, and he gave a seift laughing noise, a choked chuckle that drifted high and into the magical clouds, the illusions. He beckoned a magic of his own. It started with only a couple drops, then quickened to a still warm drizzle. It was rain, pattering onto the dry earth, and it too was crimson, almost like blood. More like wine though, Twisted relished the warmth of it against his pelt, and fancied in his own splendidness. So if there was to be a battle, then so be it, let blood spill and the air be rent by the cries of those damned. Twisted's lips curved up in a gruesome smile, those green eyes growing wide as he squared his body off towards Kit. Four silver tails were raised high above his back like swaying banners of war.
The kitsune's teeth grit together as he hovered between a solid form and a form of ether, of pure spirit, waiting for one to spring forward and try to catch him in their jaws. Let them try. Meanwhile he safegaurded his mind with a tall thick iron wall, tried to block everything off. "This is your own doom, I warn thee, Kit. Step forward and you have sealed your fate in this world. I will do all with no sense of remorse, for I possess none. Make your choice, before I make it for you." Inside his head, these words filled his skull with an eerie thicknes as the earth settled and Twisted could feel his magic rising. Everythign was very still, thick with the interacting and counteracting magics of all four kitsunes. Who would limp here out of here with their life?

Kit was about to lunge, ignoring the warning, but was slammed aside by Kade, who was almost panicky. She immediately regained her footing, and snarled, "Why did you do that?"
Kade was worried. For years, he had watched his sister push herself to almost insanity, driven to do so by the treatment of the others before her...
[Into the past...]
Kade was chatting casually with his friends, in fox form, and found himself soon sitting alone, his friends having leapt away. He followed, interested, and leapt over the bush to see what all the fuss was about. His eyes widened. Kit stood, snarling and snapping, in the center of a circle of kitsune's his friends and even his family jeering at her. They approached her at different angles at the same time, snapping at her fur and making it stick out in numerous places. Some nips even left bleeding wounds. She was so young... "Hey, Kit. Want to control us? Then DO IT! FREAK!" his best friend laughed at her, and Kit snapped. She lunged for her, rolling on top of her until she changed to human form. She leapt off, changed, and threw the girl against the ground, grabbing a rock and smashing it against her skull. He could see it vividly, the crimson liquid matting her snow white hair as ran down her face and neck. Everyone was stunned, including Kade. But they weren't done. The girl, Sesosa, she was called, thre Kit off of her and slammed her against a tree. Kit punched her, but Sesosa merely put her fist in her stomach and threw her into the crowd, who reacted immediatly by jumping on her. Kade had to fight his way through the crowd, fighting off his best of friends to reach her and drag her away, leaping into the water. He had used his... 'skills' to make the water form a dome around them, and they traveled, Kit ladled with severe wounds... He couldn't keep her there...
And now it was going to happen all over again.
Kit snapped at him in her rage, tearing through his skin as she shoved him out of the way and onto the ground, snarling as she created a wall of flame around her and the other kitsune. "I have sealed it." she snarled, showing her teeth, and flooded the area behind his wall with flame, enfulging everything in the way.
