A new Life Beginning Or Ending . . .

A chilling breeze swept past a sleeping figure, waking her from a peaceful sleep. The black an grey she-wolf had been on a long journey, her past weighing her down as she searched for a new pack to settle with. Her journey had been long and tiring. She had ventured from the other side of the mountains, her homeland that had been taken over by hunters looking for wolf pelts.

She turned over and fell back asleep. Her dream was of her as a pup . . .

"Phantom?!?!, Hey! Phantom, quit staring into space and come look at this!" Her brother called. "What is it now?". She followed her brother over to the edge of the hill they lived on. "Woah!, look at all the carribu grazing". Phantom said ashtonished, "I've never seen so many in my life!". She ran over to her mother, "Mom how come there are so many carribu this season, even though there was so much snowfall." "Well my dear",Her mother replied " When the snow melted, it gave all the plants and seeds water to grow even better than before." Her mother was a snow white she-wolf. Her eyes shown a glistening blue in the night. "Can we take a closer look at them, I promise we won't scare them." Phantom and Ash pleaded, "Alright but be careful." She said in a protective tone. "We will."

As they started to head down the hill they noticed two shining eyes watching the caribu. They ignored it, thinking they were just loners passing through the territory. Once they were at the bottom of the hill they crouched behind a fallen tree, watching the carribu without interuption. Then out of the dense trees a wolf was stalking a carribu calf that had wandered away from it's parents. We stayed low to the ground and waited to see how this wolf would take down the calf. We had never seen a wolf take down prey before since we had to stay inside our den when our parents went hunting. Suddenly the carribu stopped grazing and looked around, I knew they had heard the other wolf and that they would go running, probably this direction, but she wanted to stay and watch. One of the bigger carribu spotted the wolf, it warned the whole herd, which sent them running their way. The groung started to tremble. She closed her eyes and froze.

She awoke finding a pile of snow on her back.She stretched then stood up and shook all of the snow off her back. She yawned then scented the air for prey, She found a rabbit hiding in a bush. This will do for now, She thought. The rabbit must of sensed her presence because it went running out of the bush. She chased it for a while until it got tired and started slowing down. She sped up and killed with one swift bite to the neck.

After she had devoured the small rabbit, she looked around to see where she had ended up. The scents were unfamilure to her. She decided she would wander around. By the time noon had come around the scents had gotten stronger, she guessed she was in a pack's territory. Even though she wasn't in a real pack before she knew how they worked. So she knew that scouts and guards were patrolling. She decided she would go on deeper into the territory.

As she got deeper into the territory the scents became fresher, she knew she was getting close to the center of the territory. She started thinking about what type of wolves they were. Were they going to be nice and let her stay, or mean and chase her. By the time she stopped thinking she could see all the dense full of wolves and she could see pups playing together, as her and her brother had when they were that age.She stood still and took a deep breath before she headed into the clearing . . .

The air was clear as the various wolf pups yipped and played together in front of the dens. The older wolves watched them, talking amongst themselves and making sure the pups stayed out of trouble. It was a typical day, perhaps nothing special. Or perhaps something special was just yet to happen.

She sat quietly, enjoying the feel of the wind in her pale fur and feathers, tainted only with spots of silver and blue. A smile rested on her lips. She was a pretty wolfess, slender though strong. She had seen many years and different hardships, but she loved to sit and watch the pups as they grew and developed. One came bounding up to her, eyes alight and tail wagging. "Look! Look, Antarctica! Look what I've found!" She turned her attention toward the pup, brown with white markings. "What is it, dear?"
"It's a clover! I heard it's a good sign from the gods." Antarctica smiled and dipped her head. "Well then, keep it with you, darling." The pup nodded and bounded off excitedly, pouncing on another pup and proceeding to nip at her ear.

The wolfess tipped her nose to the wind, and it was then she noticed an unfamiliar scent. She looked in the direction, her eyes spying someone on the edge of the clearing. A loner?

She rose, shaking out her fur and then began moving in the other's direction, at last coming to a stop as she reached her. "Hello," she said, "What brings you here?" There were many things Antarctica could have asked. Such as if this wolf were lost or had come intentionally to these lands, this wolf's intentions, or even this wolf's name. But she chose her words because she felt they would be best. Perhaps the other had been expecting an introduction. Perhaps not. Either way, Antarctica patiently awaited the other's response.

Maelathorta sits, listening to the latest news and gossip in Shinkou. Normally he doesn't care much for the gossip, but he feels something special about today. As his winged companion speaks, he closes his eyes and angles his head upward, feeling the sun on his fur and relaxing to it, but still listening.

He doesn't do much, at least his job in his pack. He delivers messages, and as such he needs to know the goings-on of the territories through which he travels. There have been a few minor fights along the borders, but nothing major, and usually just against aggressive loners. Shinkou seems to be significantly quieter than Akeru. Ironic in his mind. He would think that the more prejudiced pack would be more raucous. Instead, Akeru seems to be full of strife recently, with random skirmishes among energetic new members. At least the battles and duels keep to themselves, he can safely deliver his messages without worry of being attacked.

As Mal muses over these recent events and his friend rambles on, he notices a newcomer at the edge of the clearing, creeping up and peeking in, apparently unsure of her place. He nudges his friend, signalling him to be quiet, then points to the newcomer with a hidden arrow made of light. His friend can see it and looks up to the newcomer. Mal makes the arrow disappear, silently watching the new she-wolf with interest as a Shinkou that had been talking to a pup goes up to greet her.

" I . . . uh, I came here looking for a new pack to live with." She said shyly. Phantom looked at the wolfess wondering why she had not chased her off or threatened her life. She looked at the wolfess with curious yet frightened eyes , watching her body language and movements. She couldn't find anything threatening about her. She looked into her soft eyes, she could only find understanding and pity. "I see." She replied . "Where have you traveled from ?" Her voice was soft, like a mother encouraging her pups to go out of the den for the first time. "I came from the the other side of that mountains." She pointed with her nose to the far mountains with snowy caps. She watched the wolfess, who's face gave away that she was surprised at how far the young she-wolf had traveled." How. . . how long did it take you to travel from that far away?" She asked in a surprised voice."Well . . . I'm not quite sure, I guess about a week or two."

The young she-wolf looked around to see how many other wolves had noticed her. She saw a young male looking directly over at her, she couldn't look for very long because she felt as if the sun was beating on just her. When he looked away the burning stopped. She started to wonder if they would accept her int o their pack. If they did, would they all accept her or would they chase her away with no where to go. Her thoughts were interupted by the wolfess who had been talking the whole time. "So, whats your name?" She asked curriosily. " It's Phantom." I guessed she would say the same thing that they all did “ I can see why, your mask is like one of a phantom that goes around killing." I was wrong, she just smiled and said " My name is Antarctica."

The she-wolf took a step back shocked at the kindness of this wolf. "I . . . Uh I came her looking for a new pack to live with."She forced out. She began to think of reasons why she hadn't chased her off. Her thoughts were interupted by a light shining on her. She looked around and found a male looking at her with curious eyes. He looked away taking the bright light with him. As she looked around more she noticed how friendly this pack was. All the pups played together, groups of elders watching with joy. She thought to herself that this pack would make a lovely place to live. But she knew it wasn't her decision, she knew she would have to meet the alpha. . .

Antarctica observed the other's body language and movements. Perhaps the other had been expecting a much different approach afterall. But that was of the past now. She gave a nod and smiled understandingly. Many wanderers who came through Shinkou ended up staying and calling it home. "Well, you've certainly come to a good place to start." Antarctica paused, shifting her position to show the other could come and sit with the others if she wished. At least for the time being. "What is your name?" she asked.

Phantom became comfortable with this wolfess. " My name is Phantom. Thank you for being so kind to me," she said shyly " May I ask what your name is?" She looked around to see if she could find who she though the alpha might be. She spotted a massive wolf but thought he would me or a warrior or guard than an alpha. She stood up quietly and waited for the wolfess to answer.

Phantom. It was an interesting name, and spoke volumes. Antarctica was curious, but she mentioned nothing of it. "Pleasure to meet you." She paused, "No need to thank me. I am Antarctica." Another pause, "I have been a part of Shinkou for a long time now." She began to lead the way back to the group of wolves sitting and watching the pups as they bounded about and played.

Upon noticing Phantom looking around she asked, "What are you looking for, Phantom?" She tilted her head to the side, wondering if this wolf was nervous, anxious, excited? Or perhaps a mixture of all of them?

Mal slowly begins approaching the new wolf and the one who was talking to her. He does so unobtrusively, and carefully so as to not frighten the newcomer. She smells like a loner, so she could only be hoping to join. He gets close enough to hear her say her name. Phantom... Well, that is a lovely-sounding name, he thinks. He looks back at his winged friend, trying to tell him to stay put. Mal has more experience in meeting random loners than he. After all, he is a kai.

Observing the newcomer, he briefly admires her shiny white mask, before looking away. It's not only rude to stare, he was looking her in the face. He casually and unobtrusively, almost covertly looks her over, trying to read her personality just from her stance. This rarely works, even when he knows the wolf, but one of his old friends could do it. He's dead now, or at least he hasn't heard from him in quite some time. Either way, it's history. He needn't worry himself over it. She has a beautiful black coat, though. The rod about his neck briefly glows a shade lighter as he looks at her.

" It's just that I . . . don't know if I would be allowed to, since I haven't me the alpha yet." She looked to the side to hide her face. She noticed a male walking towards them. He was looking her over, which didn't surprise her because she was on their territory. She blushed and looked away. She looked back at Antarctica, somehow her expression had reminded her of her mother. A tear welled up in her, she looked down hoping that she hadn't noticed. Phantom looked back up into Antarctica's eyes which were soft and caring.

Anarctica glanced up at Maelathorta. She recognized him.. not because they had met before, but because she had seen him now and then making his runs through Shinkou for messages and such. This was the first time she had been near him up close. She was curious about him, but she could get to that in a moment, perhaps. She turned her attention back to Phantom, ears twitching as she caught the other's words.

Another smile graced her lips. "Oh, there isn't some sort of process. As long as you have no hostile intentions, you may join us. Welcome to the Shinkou pack, Phantom." She glanced once again at Maelathorta. "Greetings to you." If she noticed how the kai looked at Phantom, she gave no indication, neither if she noticed Phantom's tear. It was none of her business... at least on having just met these two officially.

"The day is nice, make yourself comfortable." She mostly spoke to Phantom, though she also spoke to the male as well. He had a job, but that didn't mean he couldn't just be a wolf for a while if he so wished.

Phantom noticed her glances at the male, maybe she had never met him before. Was he a newcomer like me? His scent was the same as the others, if he was, he had been here for a while. Phantom's thoughts got interrupted by a fly buzzing by her ears. She hadn't taken a bath since before she left. " Do you think I could take a bath before I meet any other wolves, I smell horrible." Phantom said with smile. As she waited for the wolfess to answer, she noticed her breathing was getting harder. She thought it was from exaustion, she blacked out and fell to the ground . . .
